The 4.7L V8's redline is listed at 5500, but it doesn't seem to even get in the least bit rough when it approaches that. Is the 5500 a hedged number or can it really be taken a bit higher?

I have had mine at 6200 and never hit a rev limiter. It doesnt really matter though because running it over 5000 doesnt help any. As a matter of fact it really hurts your 1/4 time to take it any higher than that.

I haven't seen a post from Mad Duc in a long time - that one was 6 years old ! Yours won't rev to 6 grand ? That's where the redline is for my '00 4.7; not 5500. All I have to do is keep my foot in it.

Why go higher?

The torque and hp peaks change quite a bit when you have aftermarket cams, exhaust, throttle body. I would just leave it alone for now though stlbumpinkoda. Wait until your other stuff is done.

I was hitting the rev limiter at 6200 rpm when I dynoed my '01 last month. The HP and TQ numbers drop off big time after 5000 rpm. Superchips will eliminate the limiter, but there is no performance gain. By the way, a pre-'03 intake manifold and HO cams yields peak torque at 3400, instead of 3600 rpm.

Marv - the reason to go higher is that you will still be in the best part of the power band when you shift; so you'll get to max power in the next gear faster. Not as much rpm drop for the next gear.

I just did some research on krcs website and on their fairly modded motors I dont think the shift point should be above 5700. Seems low to me but either the intake or the heads must be keeping it in the lower power band.

Hopefully graphite will see this and let us know if it was the intake since he make a custom one.

I was going to mention shifting higher CAN help, but Kowalski beat me to it!

Today I held it in first manually to about 6500 and when it went into 2nd it pulled pretty hard from there since it was in the power band.

All I did was hollow out a 2000 year intake and glue it back together.

While the flow can't possible by really good because of all the jagged turns in there now and whatnot, but it DID make some difference.
Before I would hold it manually in 1st (the Superchips took care of the limiter at approx 6200) and it would just DIE at 6200. I mean it would barely rev any more with it floored.
After swapping the other intake that I HACKED up it pulled right to 7k. Still dropping power I am sure. But goes to show it COULD use to breath at higher RPM's.

Make a customer aluminum intake like an LT1 and drop in some KRC 212 cams and I bet the HP shoots right up close to 300 if you could get it to breath there. Then it will be a challenge to retain some of the great tourque the 4.7 actually has when it's stock :p

Thank God for youtube.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUrB_p40s_c

There's my video. It drops in power big time at 6500 but is able to rev to 7k

Graphite,

If I hadn't seen the video or your truck, I wouldn't have believed it! The 7K I mean.

With all the little things, including the superchips I've done to my motor, the awesome dyno numbers I've run, I still can't get my motor to go past ~6000, w/o the fuel shutting down, as in the rev limiter.

I'm not sure why yours will go much higher than mine? MInes a 2001, don't know why that would make a difference.

I don't know why yours didn't get changed like that. I'm only using the 87 program as well, not the 91 so I can run 87 octane. And I have NEVER hit the limiter. I actually don't know where it is!

My 02 4.7 auto AWD also hits a rev limiter at around 6200 rpm. And yes, I am running the Superchips tuner. And yes, the rev limit is the same with no tuner and with any of the SC programs.

Seems the SC Tuner has different programming for the different years too.
