Subject: Choices for Intake on 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: I have an '03 QC 4.7 with a 5spd auto.
2 of the first mods that I want to do to it are put on a tonneau cover, and a new less restrictive warm air intake (as I can't afford a new hood too).
I'm basically looking to keep my low end, but improve the air flow and the already good gas milage. I plan to put in a 180 t-stat, HO cams, free up the exhaust and throw a set of autolite 3923's in the future.
I face the delema of choosing the intake. I have found many and wanted some advice.
1st in the line up is the 360 Air Intakez.
2nd is one sold by Hughes Engines.
3rd is by Intense Performance.
and 4th is the old K&N.
Are there any I forgot?
First hand expereince?
All are kinda comparable in price, and all claim to have a gain in milage and HP.
How well would the performance match up to an opend up TB if I ever got one.
My gas milage is at about 17.5 on country roads, and I'd prefer it to only go up.
Any criticism is welcome!!
Thanks

Message: I have a GTS2 hood from Jonas, it has the
best intake available. I can look through the
NACA duct and see the air filter. When it's
running you can hear the air being sucked in.

Message: You forgot to mention the Shaker Hood, which has THE best intake available, not the gts2 hood

Message: I always like to post this when someone asks these questions. Please, do what you think is best though. This is from an intake manufacturer.
"Unless you plan on doing in excess of 200mph you really don't do any measurable
"forcing" of air into the intake system. There is no difference in the
performance of either the front facing inlet as used on the 98-99 intakes or the
fender inlet of the 2000+ models. With the 98-99 version there aren't the AC
lines that get in the way, but for the 2000+ models you would have to contend
with getting through them to get out the front. Also, there is actually quite a
bit of airflow into the inner fender coming from back at the base of the
windshield which is also a high pressure area."
Good luck with whatever you do.

Message: There was even someone who did a test with
regards to "cold air" intake and an intake
located farther back (for example, right on top
of the throttle body)... Once he got over say
5-10 MPH, there was enough cool*er* air
circulating around in the engine bay to make
the difference between a "cold" air intake and
an open element air filter negligible.
Go with the one you can afford!

Message: I have the 360 Air Intakez. It sounds like a vacumme cleaner on steroids. Does a very nice job. Also put Gibson Headers and Catback Exhaust on. Really nice performance for a reasonable price.

Message: Just go with the K&N FIPK. It is the most straight forward straight tube intake with obviously the best filter on the market. You can't beat the K&N quality. I have the FIPK on my 2000 4.7L and I can hear the air being sucked in loudly. My engine is much more thirsty with this and my mileage has only gone up, not down. Don't be bothered with the added noise and vibration, it sounds goooooood, and beeeefy. Also, for the price, it's the best available. Don't bother with a new hood.
clean&shiny is good, mud&dirt is better

Message: Whoa.......As to your comments about the
shaker hood, let me tell you my experience.
I had one, they look great, a real eye catcher.
But it does have draw backs. If you are getting
one for looks, that's one thing. But if you want
to go fast, it's not your best option. First is the
weight, it weighs almost 60lbs. thats 15 lbs
more than the stock hood. Second, the airflow
goes in the shaker and has to make a 180
and the a 90 degree turn to get to the filter.
Don't take my word for it, go to KRC website,
Marty dyno's with the shaker on and off, there
was a 10HP difference.
