Subject: Single Cat. IP: Logged
Message: I have been reading about exhaust on this board trying to deside what to go with on my 2002 quad cad 4.7L. My question is that I have read that there are three cats and when I looked under mine it only has one is this rare or does it have to do with where oyu purchased yoour truck.

Message: Does everyone have three cats? Dakotas in Nebraska or at least all of them that I have looked under only have one.

Message: Well the only thing that I can see on mine coming from the manifols is pipe until it goes into the y and then there is a cat or at least I think it is, it is about 6 inch diamter and then it goes back the the huge muffler. I was just wondering because I have seen that alot of members have removed the third cat and I think mine anly has one.. Is this a good thing? Will it sound good with duals? and if I only have one which muffler should I use.

Message: I don't think I want it that load. I want the sound load out the back and not that annoying resonance in the cab.

Message: How many cats you have depends on where you live and what emissions package is mandated by your state. California emissions and "50-state" emissions have three cats. "Federal" emissions only has one. I live in CT. I only have one on my '02. A buddy only has one on his '03. If I bought the same truck in Mass, I'd have three cats.

Message: Won't removing all of the cats, be it one, two, or three, play hell with the computer because of the 02 sensor? I figure that's why they make high flow cats, so you're computer will still function properly.

Message: You can remove the "main cat" on a 3 cat setup because there is no 02 sensor after it. The PCM will never know it's gone.
