Subject: Throttle Position Sensor Mod - Hated It IP: Logged
Message: I drive my 2000 4.7 auto in rush hour traffic every day, I'm talking DC-area crawling, and yes it sucks. When I gave it gas the truck would accelerate too much, I noticed the idle would increase by about 300rpm as soon as the truck hit 5mph. I wanted to try the TPS adjustment, so I drilled the inserts out and set it to 0.7V and the problem was WORSE. I barely tapped the throttle, up went the idle and off went the truck. To accelerate slightly I had to hit the gas and then keep the brakes on. I actually adjusted the TPS back the other way, I think I'm at around 0.25V now (stock was around 0.45 I think.) Any thoughts? Has anyone else noticed that the idle increases when the truck hits around 5mph?
BTW possibly seemed a little better at 25+mph, there wasn't as much hesitation between throttle and acceleration, but I couldn't put up with the surging at parking lot speeds.

Message: THis sounds very feasible.. How long did you drive with it at .7V? I just ask because mine was at .5 and when I went to .75 I noticed nothing...

Message: The whole point of doing the TPS mod is better off idle acceleration which is what you described, and if you are moving at 5mph, you aren't idleing. The engine keeps the revs up slightly to keep the truck moving, otherwise it would stall. Would you rather the truck stall from bogging down, or keep running but at a higher RPM?

HSKR - From a stop on level ground, if I accelerate up to about 5mph and just let off the gas, the truck would idle at close to 20mph. That is a lot more power applied than what I would consider necessary to "keep the truck moving." I think you are confusing "better" off idle acceleration with "MORE" off idle acceleration. There is a difference. Better means controllable, as in X amount of throttle yields Y amount of acceleration, and 2X throttle yields 2Y acceleration. With this truck, virtually zero throttle yields way too much acceleration, and that is definitely NOT "better" driveability. To me, better means "doing exactly what I want it to do."

Message: As I said, the mod definitly wasn't what you wanted to do. For most of us who do the TPS mod, we are racing our trucks, and want the quicker off idle(quicker IS better) acceleration. My R/T will coast at 15-20mph with the RPMs about 1K unless I push on the brake to slow it down. You are confusing running in gear with idleing. Idle is sitting still with the truck in park. The engine will ALWAYS run at a higher RPM with the tranny in gear than with it in park. It HAS to so the engine won't bog down from the extra pull on the engine. Like I said, would you rather your engine ran in gear at 500RPM an bog down really bad almost to the point of dying??

--- If you put the truck in neutral, I'll bet ya the idle goes up--- if so-- you have a powersteering pump sensor that is whacked-- The sensor ups the rpm to offset the load-- and can cause the idle to increase and or hang. If you still have a warranty left, take it to your dealer-- otherwise-- you'll need to pay the $$$ to fix it.

Message: When I put it in neutral the idle drops. I understand completely that the FI has to apply additional fuel to keep the truck from stalling when it is stopped in gear, but that isn't what is happening here. Put the truck in gear and the idle basically stays the same, as it should, but hit 5-10mph and the idle goes up by around 300rpm, and that has nothing to do with keeping the engine from bogging. That is poor driveability, plain and simply, and Dodge really dropped the ball on that one. I guess I'm jaded coming from a 2-wheel background, where you have to have a PERFECT connection between the throttle and the engine. I have owned two fuel injected street bikes, raced one of them (road course, not drag), and in comparison the mapping that Dodge used is crap - there is no need to increase the throttle by 300rpm when the truck hits 5-10mph. Unfortunately it seems that most people posting here just don't understand what good FI mapping is, obviously Dodge doesn't.
I agree with what someone above said, that a lot of these mods are definitely not for street-oriented driving, unfortunately it seems that the base truck itself has some issues that make it less than enjoyable for street-oriented driving also.
I have actually started taking my wife's Jetta to work lately, it is also a 2000. Gets much better gas mileage, but I just don't enjoy driving it like I do the truck, but with the Jetta you let off the gas and the car slows, so it gets the nod for driving to work now. Too bad Dodge can't learn a lesson from VW when it comes to fuel injection mapping.

Message: Here is a sugestion. Redo the TPS adjustment, paying close attention to the instructions from Speedtweaks. Allow the processor to relearn the new settings. Then see what happens.

Message: if you do lower the tps voltage, do not go lower than .35 volts. The computer works with the tps in the range of .35 to .95 volts and if lower or higher, it could trigger a code or check engine light.

Message: The upper and lower range limits for the TPS are .25 and 4.49, respectively, as taken from the FSM. Anything outside those numbers will trip a mil.

Message: bob, i was referring to it being "on" but not running... sorry i was going by what the haynes manual says...
that .25 to 4.49 is the range while the engine is running.

Message: my dakota v8 4.7 idles at 500 rpm at a light...if i put itin neutral it goes up...is this normal?....also my check engine light is on with code p0455...iv'e read this is the gas cap...if not what else can it be?

Message: Couple of things not mentioned. When you changed the TPS setting, did you disconnect the battery so as to start a proper PCM RESET> # 2 ... With your HAND and truck in park, try VERY SLOWLY pushing down on the gas peddle. it just may be slightly sticking on you. worth a try.

Message: Ok, thank you. I thought I read where someone cleaned the soot off of theirs and it fixed the problem. Did change the plugs and it was no different. I see they say there is no egr in a 98 dakota. I'm still stumped.

Message: Not the TPS. You need to clean the TB and the IAC. Remove the IAC from the throttle body and clean the plunger and the orifice on the TB. DO NOT turn or push the plunger on the IAC. Be gentle with it.
