Whats up guys. I am looking at getting a Dakota very soon...like tomorrow...but I have a dilemna. This truck is going to be for work, and work is going to be paying me a $300 month truck allowance. I wish I could get a v8 4x4...but they wont pay for gas mileage on a 4x4. So I have two options pretty much.
I have two trucks I am looking at. One is a 2001 v6 2wd extended cab. It has 50,000 miles on it. Its an extremely clean truck. Its lifted (i think about 2") its got the nice little screen on the ceiling that shows mileage and everything. Its got the wider center console which I need because I use my laptop all the time in my truck. Its white with clear lights, and just looks very very clean overall.
The other truck I am looking at is a Dark blue 2000 4.7 v8 2wd. It only has 36,000 miles on it. This truck is pretty clean too. Its got a billet grille. Stock Height, doesnt have the nice little milage screen or garage door opener buttons, and it also has the skinnier center console which is kinda a big deal for me because I use a laptop in my truck all the time. Oh ya, and it has flowmasters already on it too.
Overall, Id say appearance and interior the 2001 V6 is a better looker. I love the looks of the v6 a lot. On the other hand...I love the 4.7 engine. It seems that they both get about the same gas mileage, so thats not too big of an issue. From you V6 guys, it seems that the truck doesnt have much go to it at all, and I like to be able to get on it a little bit. OVerall what is your opinion on the v6 truck?
You guys let me know what you think. I really need to hear from all of you V8, and V6 guys and tell me what you think. Is there a lot of stuff you can do to the V6 to give it some ummpphhh? God...I dont know what to do. I usually would opt for the 8 right away. But I already have a 78 corvette that will be my fast car, but I still dont like driving trucks that dont have some get up and go...let me know what all you guys think.

I think if its for work get the V6, lord knows my 4.7 is a gas hog. I think the V6 will get better MPH.

Well, I have a 5.2 V8, but I have driven the 3.9 V6. If you are going to be driving extensively, and gas is a concern for you, I would probably opt for the V6. The 4.7 you described sounds like its owner was trying to spiffy it up a bit (beware the billet grill!), and if your job pertains to any sort of formal business, the clientel may be apprehensive of someone rolling up in a billet-grilled, Flowmaster equipped Dakota. I assume the wider center console you described is the 40/60/40 split bench, and the 4.7 sounds like it has the bucket seats w/ center console. I personally prefer the split bench, due to its greater versatility. Just test drive both like you would normally drive, and go with the one you feel more comfortable with.

The 3.9 will be just fine, the 4.7 is really not that much more powerful...if it was between a 3.9 and a 5.9 though...go 5.9, that is a true V8.

Yeah, that's what I was going to say....
Just get the V-6. It's got the same power & mileage as the 4.7 and the 4.7 is too hard to modify anyway. There's plenty of performance stuff out there to turn your V-6 into a low 16-second screamer! And you'll still get a thrifty 16.5 mpg!!

The 4.7L not much more powerful than the 3.9L? 60 more h.p. is not much more horsepower? Get the 4.7L. It gets the same and sometimes better MPG the the 3.9L and can actually get up and go. You can get vehicle accesories that will accomidate a laptop. If you are concerned about looks get rid of the billet grill and the flowmasters. Or just swap the flowmasters for some magnaflows or gibsons to quiet it down some. The 4.7L you describe has 36K compared to 50K on the the other. Just get the 4.7L...you'll enjoy it. If you need more suspension under it get the activesuspension rear end and some 3.92 gears if it doesn't already have them.

I have a 4.7 with 4.10 gears and get 17 city, 21 highway, sometimes higher, I have two friends with 3.9 2wd dakotas and they get terrible gas mileage and have way less power, test drive both if you can, you will feel the difference. I would never buy a 3.9 v6, you'll regret it.

Well thanks for the replys guys. I guess I failed to explain this correctly. My work will be paying for this truck, and I will be using it for work. But I am a manager for my dads company. So this is actually going to be my personal truck as well. So I want it to be to my liking. Well...after long thinking and testdriving both a few times, I realize now that theres no way I could drive the V6. It has no balls at all. I love the 4.7 motor, especially with the flows. I think Im going to have to go with the V8. I could always throw a little lift on that, which would be much easier then trying to give that v6 some balls.
When I said I was was concerned about looks...I meant I wanted the one that looked better. I actually love the billet grille with some clear lights. So I think Im going to be taking the v8. Does anyone know where I can get some of those accessories that can accomadate a laptop?
Also..from whoever said that the v6 has the same power and mileage....youve got to be kidding. The 4.7 is such a stronger motor. I can tell you that just by test driving like 50 different dakotas this weekend. I love the 4.7 motor. To be honest, depending on the truck, it feels like the 4.7 has more balls then the 5.9. Plus everything that I am reading says that the 4.7 gets just as good of mileage as the 3.9

I just figured that if you were trying to choose between two trucks based on the size of the console between the seats, then the V-6 would be perfect for you. And I was just repeating some of the funnier myths that are often perpetuated on this board.
1. The 4.7 has no torque.
2. The 4.7 has no aftermarket parts available.
3. The 4.7 gets terrible mileage.
4. The 4.7 doesn't feel any stronger than the V-6.
5. The 5.9 rules over all trucks.
6. So on. So forth.
More or less just figuring that if you were offered a V-6 and a V-8, and you were even considering the V-6... then the V-6 was absolutely perfect for you.

The 4.7 is a wimpy V8! It is an embarassment to Dodge. Thank god they redeemed themselves with the 5.7 Hemi. Seriously, you guys say all you want to make your 4.7L sound all nice, on the street, you all know the real deal between the 3.9 and the 4.7 even if you are afraid to admit it. Take a 5.9 dakota and now you are talking! Get real.

I've had them all:
98 v6 cc 5-spd 4x4
99 5.2 cc auto 4x4
00 5.9 cc r/t
03 4.7 rc 5-spd
98-was a slow pig, passing on 2 lanes was scary and mileage going 75-80 on the freeway was horrible.
99-got better mileage than the v6 had more power, not scary passing.
00-sucks the gas like there's no tomorrow, but that's due to my heavy foot and blower.
03-gets the best mileage of all of them including the v6. just got 20.9 average coming back from nevada with 500 pounds of gear in the back. doing 75-80 average drops to around 19.
Get the 4.7. You'll hate the v6 compared to the 4.7, and you'll pay more for gas with the 6, at least that was my experience and observation.

I JUST KNOW THE 4.7 GETS BETTER GAS MILEAGE THAN AN R/T AND IS FASTER WHEN STOCK VS. STOCK. MUCH BETTER GAS MILEAGE, AND OBVIOUSLY THAT R/T AUTO TRANNY IS SUCKIN SOME REAL POWER UP CUZ THE AVG. 4.7 IS 3 TO 5 TENTHS QUICKER IN THE 1/4!
THE 4.7 IS RATED FOR BETTER MPG THAN A 3.9 FOR A REASON. WHEN DRIVEN RIGHT IT GETS 20 OR 21 MPG. I HAVE ALSO BURNT A TANK OR 2 AND GOT NO BETTER THAN 11 WITH A HEAVY FOOT.
THINK ABOUT, 360= 50 MM TB, 4.7(287)= 68 MM TB. CAN YOU SAY FLOW!!! THEY DID THEIR HOMEWORK. IF THE 4.7 WASN'T A GOOD MOTOR THEY SURE WOULDN'T'VE MADE A HO VERSION WITH UPPED NUMBERS.
DON'T BE SURPRISED IF YOU SEE THE BEARING CRADLE ON THE "REPLACEMENT" 4.7 HEMI, CUZ I BET YOU IT'LL JUST BE A 4.7 WITH DIFFERENT HEADS.
I'M SURE MANY WILL AGREE!!!
P.S.- WAL-MART DOESN'T WANT UNIONS CUZ THEY'RE TOO HIGHLY PAID. THAT'S WHY UNIONS ARE FADIN OUT IN CERTAIN AREAS. NEW SOLE PROPRIETORSHIPS ARE BORN EVERYDAY THAT CONTRIBUTE TO OUR ECONOMY AND RARELY DO THEY USE A UNION DUE TO THE UNION PAYSCALE GENERALLY BEING HIGHER.
CONSIDER YOURSELF LUCKY IF YOU GOT A 4.7 IF THEY WILL INDEED BE REPLACED IN THE NEAR FUTURE. I'M SURE IT'S DUE TO THEIR COST BECAUSE OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ INFLUENCE IN THEIR DESIGN. MERCEDES ENGINES CAN HANDLE ALL SORTS OF POWER AND BE DEPENDABLE AND EFFICIENT, BUT, THEY ARE EXPENSIVE.
DODGE IS NOT KNOWN TO BE THE CADILLAC OF TRUCKS, JUST A REAL GOOD ONE, MAYBE ONE OF THE BEST, BUT THEY HAVE TO KEEP COST'S DOWN AND THAT HEMI IS SURE ENTICING WITH IT'S GOOD OL MOPAR ROOTS AND LOWER MANUFACTURING COSTS. NO DOUBT IT'S EVEN A BETTER ENGINE IN POWER OUTPUT, BUT NOT OVERALL!! I GUARANTEE YOU THAT.... THAT'S MY 2 CENTS FOR A LOT OF BULLS_HIT THAT GOES ON UNCORRECTED ON THE BOARDS.

I'm kinda in the same boat and wouldn't mind suggestions....Here in Texas (Austin at least) all that's really offered is the V6 Ext Cab or the V8 Quad Cab...I'm considering trading my '03 Silverado in and going for one of these and ask y'alls opinions as well....I "think" I found a maroon (I'm a Texas Aggies fan) one with the 4.7 and 4 drs which, in my opinion, would be great, at one dealership but also found the V6 ext cab for almost $3,000 less at a different dealership....Will resale be a big deal in the future ??? And will I regret it if I go for the V6 ??? Send me ideas and opinions ok...Thanx, Marty...
