depends on what transmission you want. Auto, go with R/T. 5-speed, go with 4.7L. good luck

Has anyone read the lastest article in Mopar Now magazine saying that they are going to put to rest which truck is faster and better? 6 out of 6 times the 4.7 smoked the R/T. They said that no doubt the 4.7 is faster stock and will eventually be faster all together. The 4.7 was a CC with 3.55 gears open diff., R/T had 3.92 lsd. Its just that since the 360 has been around for 40 years it has more mods, right now anyway.

I agree with juniork, the 4.7 is a nice peppy engine, but the 5.9 has alot more balls to it than the 4.7 does. and ive had a dak with the 4.7 and now i have an R/T. im much happier with the R/T then i ever was with the 4.7. but like juniork said, if you want a 5 speed, go with the 4.7, auto 5.9 my .02

Why dont you go and take a nice long test drive on each one, that might help you decide. If you plan on going mod crazy I would get the 5.9 I have the 4.7 5 speed manual and it seems faster than the 5.9 more fun to drive than an auto.

If a Bone Stock 5.9 runs a 15.2, and It runs a 4.7 that runs a 15.0, is it still the fastest truck? Not saying this is the case everytime, but I've had enough track runs to make my own mind up.

Give it a rest.

It's more like......The 5.9, can be made to be the faster truck.

I have an 02 cc 4.7 auto, and I ran a guy in an 01 Rt. Both trucks are completely stock, and we were dead even all the way to about 70 when we both let off (keep in mind that this was at 5:30 in the morning in Houston going down westhiemer, so I wasn't in the mood for a ticket). BTW, anyone from around Houston in here.

Crystal beach will be nice this weekend, woohooo.

Remember that much of the "feel" and throttle response of each engine will be greatly effected by what gear ratio is in the rearend of the truck.

There's more to choosing the truck you want than it's ET in the 1/4 mile. Just test drive them both and pick whichever you like best.

Nuts to both of them. go back to '98, get yourself a sport with a 5.2 engine, 3.90 rear, and run 14.9's stock all day long. I did, then came the aftermarket parts, and now Ill run circles around either one all day.

Well let’s see a 4.7L MTrans. Vs. 5.9L (auto-trans only) 15 HP is all that separates the two. If you really want the killer Dakota get a reg cab 4.7L with a 5 speed and put a few G’s in it and go looking for some GT’s or Z28’s and have a little fun. The only people that talk stuff about the 4.7L are the R/T boys who really thank bigger is better, and don’t believe the BS about High Performance mods making the 5.9L any better then 4.7L because they just don’t remember the 4.7 has a little higher compression ratio, more pressure means bigger bang. Don’t get me wrong the R/T 360’s are a bad ass truck but you pay a lot more for that little R/T sticker and you don’t get much in return.

Just bought a R/T less than 2000 miles as of now. You can bet that if you Tweak here and there the 4.7 will be in the rear view mirror not to mention that the 03 R/T has all wheel disk brakes and all wheel anti lock so which is safer hmm if you have ever owned a truck skids in the rain on quick stops are common .besides i would bet tha this is the last year you see the 5.9 in the dak hemies are coming out of hybernation. thats going to be insane

I really like R/T's, but I couldn't justify 13 mpg when I drive my Dak 30,000 miles annually. Besides, I love shifting gears. Some insurance companies penalize R/T's with higher premiums. But if you want one, don't wait; the end may be near. R/T's have brought a lot of good recognition to Dodge from the automotive world in general. The ultimate performance choice in 2004 just might be the 4.7 5-speed.

Yes, compression ratio is higher on a 4.7, but having an additional 15hp plus an additional 50lbs of torque make the 5.9 still the top dawg.

Is it just me or are the newer V8's across all lineups...Ford, chevy, dodge...etc...getting wimpier? I mean, take a 383 stock in 71 and it was already at 335hp, 440-6packs were pushing 395hp factory...today we are looking at V8 numbers, with exception to the new 5.7 Hemi, pushing 230, 250, 260ish numbers. The new Hemi is actually what I consider what I am looking for in buying a V8. I think Dodge is getting back to the balls-out philosphy....THANK GOD! I am getting excited about the new 4.7 Hemi that is supposed to be near the 280 mark.

I just got a 2002 3.9L 4x4 SXT and love it....I'll be ready for another Dakota, or Ram, in about 5 yrs....looks like the market will hold some solid V8 power by then.

Horsepower ratings in the 60's-70's were based on gross, modern engines are based on net. You can't make exact comparisons.

Exact comparison or not....

Having owned and driven modern-day and blast-from-the-past V8s.....the old wipe the floor with the new. It is just disappointing that's all. But, I had the opportunity to drive a new HEMI Ram, and it truly reminds me of my 71 runner with the 440...I just hope Chrysler continues the focus on power and not economy. I mean, yes, today car manufacturers are forced under regulations to do certain things....but there are still those of us out there that just flat out want HP and could care less what the mileage, emissions and all that other mumbo jumbo is!

To franlofter: I did test drive both. I borrowed a friends v-tech and went to the dealearship. I test drove a 4.7L RC Dak w/3.90's & automatic and ran a 15.2. I test drove a RC R/T and ran a 15.5. I ended up buying a red 4.7L RC w/3.55's and automatic. I wanted the R/T because it looked AWSOME! But, it stickerd for $5K more than the red SLT I purchased. Had the R/T blown the doors off the 4.7L like it was supposed to I would have bought it. I would have bought the 4.7L w/3.90's but the color sucked. It was that drab grayish color. The dealership I trade with happens to be just off the interstate. So, high speed test runs are made easy. Should I mention that I just drove 2,800 miles over the last 2 weeks on vacation and I averaged 19.4mpg with a best of 20.5mpg(all interstate 80mph) and a worst of 16.5(all city). I even drag raced a manual 6spd Nissan Maxima just outside of the Lowes Motor Speedway. I kicked his ass!!! That car is supposed to run high 14's according to Motor Trend! NOT! Maybe he missed a gear? I even let him have a jump on me. By the time I hit 2nd gear I was a car length in front of him. When I hit 3rd I quit pulling on him and it appearded that he was gaining slightly on me. By that time I was already 3 car lengths ahead of him and we had to let out of it.

I almost forgot what this forum was about. To answer the question "4.7L or 5.9L". If I had the money I would still get the R/T. All the 5.9L needs is some head work. It just can't breath. You can't denie that the R/T looks better and it may some day be a collector. A set of heads shouldn't run more than $1,500.00. If you want raw potential and have the bucks to throw down get the R/T. It has all the heavy duty items you need for abusive driving and there is lots of potential. Remember the 454ss Silverado? If you want bang for the buck and don't plan to make modifications get the 4.7L.

I planned for mods on my lil 287.

It responded very well, and will keep getting faster with every check I write out. hehehe

13.3 @ 102 stock cams, TB, heads, intake, so there's a lot more room for improvement.

So... What was that again about buying a 4.7, but not to mod?
