Subject: switch to synthetic?

Message:
Getting close to the 3000 mark since i bought my 2000 5.9 with 46K mi...I dont know what it has run in the past, but should i make the switch to synthetic oil? I've heard it might start leaking oil after a while? Should i go ahead and change out some gaskets before i make the change?

TexasTodd is correct in that this is a question that is asked often.

A new engine:

Personally, I like to run "factory fill" to the first oil change and here is the reason quoted by Amsoil:

" New engines or engine components generate high wear metals to begin with and generally contain debris from machining and assembly. It is more beneficial to allow these wear metals to collect in an inexpensive motor oil than to circulate throughout the crankcase for extended periods in a synthetic motor oil. By operating the vehicle to its first drain interval with a petroleum oil, these wear metals and manufacturing debris collect in the oil and are then flushed out of the crankcase when drained. This allows for a much cleaner operating environment for the synthetic lubricant."

Keep in mind, many new cars come factory fill with synthetics, such as the Corvette, Porsches, Vipers, BMWs, Mercedes, and many others, including many lower priced vehicles. You can honestly switch at any time.

--------------------------------------------------
Older Engines:

Question often asked: I sometimes hear "Synthetic oils contain detergents that can make the oil seals leak in older vehicles." Is this really an issue? How old would a car have to be to not use synthetics?

Answer: Synthetic lubricants do have an inherent detergency that cleans and removes conventional motor oil deposits left over in an "older" engine. However, motor oils are designed to help swell seals slightly (esters) to prevent leakage. The only time you would observe seal leakage is if the seals are already damaged or showing signs of leakage around them. As long as the vehicle has been well maintained, and in good mechanical condition, it can be switched to a synthetic lubricant at any mileage.

stick it up your tailpipe todd. I must not be wasting too much of your time if you have the time to sit down and complain about the question that you didn't even have to respond to. I guess what they say about what comes from texas is true after all. Everyone else, thank you for taking my question seriously and thank you for your help. Oh and if anyone else is from Texas, I'm sorry about the comment about texans, it was only directed towards ButtWad Todd.

I dont see where the cost to benefit ratio make using synthetic worth it, plenty of people get 200,000 + outa regular oil why spend double every oil change??
