Subject: 318 to 350 stroker kit IP: Logged
Message: I believe that I saw a post on this kit a while back but have yet to find it in the archives. I believe that it came with pistons and rods to achive the added stroke?
Any thoughts on this?
I considered the 360 shortblock from Mopar, but have had to many differing posts on what it takes to swap them. Some say just the flex plate. Other say flex plate and converter. I just gave up.
Plus it would be cool to have somthing a bit different.
Thanks,
Nathaniel

Any thoughts?
Thanks

Message: You can't have a stroker kit without changing the crank. Using the stock crank and boring the engine .100 " ( not possible ) you would only get 334 cu in . A stock 340 has a 4.04 bore and a 3.31 stroke. Why don't you just dump a 360 in it. The kit probably has a 360 crank with the mains turned down to fit a 318 block(3.58 stroke ) with .060 over 318 pistons (3.97 bore ) that will give you 355 cu in . If you use a 3.58 stroke with a 318 piston, the pistons will crash the head because the compression height is too high. Thats where the special pistons come in. Put a 360 in it ,when it blows up it's cheaper to replace.

All the kits require a different crank to get any displacement over about 323(0.030 over 318). If your looking to save money buy a used 360 crank/rods and have the mains turned down to 318 specs. Then you just need the rods checked and arp bolts installed and KB or forged pistons. You'll end up with a 364ci motor for about $1200.

Message: POWER HUNGRY, What pistons do you use to get 364 cu in ? It requires a 4.02 bore with a 3.58 stroke. In a 318 block that is an overbore of .110". 4.02 Bore is a .02 over 360, and the 3.58 stroke is the stock 360 stroke. Do you get the block sleeved ? That seems not to smart when you can just bore a 360 .02 over. The only advantage to turning the 360 mains down to fit a 318/340 block is to decrease bearing surface speed. I could see using a 340 block, but there goes the cost advantage. Then you would end up with 367 cu in . Still have to change to .040 over 360 pistons because of the differance in compression height. Like I said before and My Opinion said, put a 360 in it.

Message: I would love to put a 360 in it. But please could someone tell me what I need to use the 360 with the 44re trans., due to the internal vs. external ballancing issues? I have asked this over and over with mixed views. Do I just need the flex plate for a 360? Also What is my PCM going to do because of the 42 ci. increase?
Thanks,
Nathaniel

Message: Nathaniel,
I'm in the process of swapping a 5.2 for a 408 in a '99 4x4 and may have a few answers for you.
My 44RE will be rebuilt with a racing master kit, the built 44RE can only take ~400HP so you have to be careful with the engine buildup. If you want to exceed 400HP go to the 46RE. Give Wayne at apsprecision.com a shout for any questions on the trans.
I'm using a hybrid (my own version) of the stroker kit hughesengines.com offers. KRC offers the strongest kit I've found if you're looking for high HP.
For balancing- you have to internally balance the stroker kit, the externally balanced 360 no longer applies with the 4.00" crank.
The engine-to-trans coupling can be an issue if you don't look ahead, just make sure you keep the 360 flexplate and get a good torque converter for the 44RE (again talk to Wayne for this, APS just ran a Group Buy for the converters).
For the PCM- use the 360 wiring harness and the 5.9L Mopar PCM (again dependent on what kind of HP you're looking for).
And buy the Mopar "Magnum Engines" book. campbellenterprises.com can be very helpful in setting up a 408 as well.
Good luck, let me know if I can help further.
Chris

Message: DAHEMIKOTA,
I just noticed I got my journals mixed, plus I forgot that mopars have the same rod journals sizes. I was thinking the 360s journals were bigger like 400 sbc journals are larger than 350s. You can turn-down the 400s journals to 350 size and the difference can be gained as more stoke by moving the journals' centerline farther away from the mains. The displacement would actually be 349ci (3.94 bore x 3.58 stroke)
Its cheaper/stronger anyway to just get a new shortblock than trying reusing stock parts in a stroker setup.

this is what you're looking for....pretty good deal, and a nice easy way to get a 0 deck short block, and would make a nice bottom end for a set of magnum heads.

But i hear all kinds of differant things. So what im wondering is, How big can i safely bore it out to (like a 340??). And i since its gonna be appart what else exactly should i upgrade while its appart? (like the camshaft??) any good info would help alot thanks

Message: For the swap from Magnum 318 to Magnum 360 in a '98, you need only swap the flexplate. That's where the balance weight is from '96 up. Same converter will work. It's always good advice to have the tranny freshened up with quality HD internals (clutches/bands) to handle the extra power.

Message: The whole stroker 318/350 thing came along a long time ago when there were no stroker cranks for 318's. Back then, the 70's, when it was cheaper to build up what you had than get a 360, if you were rebuilding, why not bore the 318 out .060" over, then, since the crank would probably need attention anyway, take a 360 crank and have it turned down to 318 bearing size. The modest stroke with the .060" overbore would yield a 350. That was the low-buck deal then when a 360 wasn't easily available, but it wasn't done very much. What is neat is what can be done with the '62-'65 318 poly (aka. semi-hemi....not unlike the 4.7). Those blocks were thick-walled, so you could bore them out .090" or more. With a 4" stroker crank, you can get a 402 rather cheaply....especially when you look at what a new crate 408 costs.

Message: Mopar 318 and 5.2 magnum engines are great, dependable engines that first appeared in 1957. They are not known as high performance engines as built by the factory. The good news is that a 318 390 stroker kit gives them a huge increase in performance. Our 5.2 Magnum / 318 stroker kits will improve the performance and durability of your 318 considerably. Depending on which stroke crank and final bore size you choose to use, you can build 318 stroker motors of 370, 390, 396 or even 402 cubic inches.

P.S. if you really wanna get crazy go 426, or 440 stroker kits and set up for lower compression and kick it up a notch & twin compound tturbo it! but thats for really deep pockets. hope you enjoy your new engine no matter whitch route you take
