Subject: Amsoil ATF in 4.7 Auto (45RFE) IP: Logged
Message: Amsoil's Auto tranny fluid states that it meets and or exceeds all ATF 4 guidlines. does anybody have experience with this fluid in the the multispeed tranny mated to the 4.7 engine?
I would really like to use a synthetic fluid as the tranny bumps pretty hard when frozen solid in these crazy cleveland winters.
Thanks

Message: Thanks BlackDak02, Nice Truck!!
But... Big Blue did not say that he was actually using the Amsoil ATF in his 4.7 Auto.
I know that Chrysler trannies are pretty picky when it comes to ATF and I don't know Big Blue, so I am unable to comment on his expertise or even to the fact that he has a 4.7 auto. No offense to Big Blue (is that short for Big Blue Oval) but I am looking for persons that may have actually done the switch.
I would love to do it, but not at the cost of my auto.
Thanks again

Maybe I'm just a little paranoid, but how can the Amsoil ATF meet all of the criteria for Dexron Mercon and ATF+4? It was my understanding that they only offered one product, not mulitple formulation.
Big Blue, did you ever have any of the dreaded shift slap (usually from 1st to 2nd while lifting off the throttle) or eradic behavior (usually when the tranny has been sitting in 10 degree weather for eight hours)? Did it help?
Thanks once more,
Blue

Message: I assumed that saying "I have had it in my 2002 45RFE" would mean I am using AMSOIL ATF but I guess it doesn't.? So to be more clear: In my 2002 4.7L auto trans. (45RFE) I switched to AMSOIL ATF back at 3400 miles. I have not had any problems that Blue Bayou spoke of at all, it is running perfectly, unless the eradic behavior when it has sat in cold weather (below 30 degrees) is the fact that the lock-up torque convertor doesn't engage for the first 5-10 minutes of driving. This is normal for these trans. and it still does it and I am not worried about it since it is normal(as verified with Dodge and reading threads about it here at DodgeDakotas.com) I use all of the AMSOIL products and have no complaints. Good luck with whatever brand you choose.

Message: Big Blue,
It was clear to me what you meant in your first reply.
Big Blue & sandman,
Did you change/flush the stock trans fluid yourself?
I've heard that those filters for the 45RFE are a little expensive.
Amsoil and Redline make quality synthetics and I am looking to go that way in prolonging the life of my 45RFE trans.
Thanks.

I think that I'm going to have to go that route. Would you recommend flushing the converter or simply drain, replace filters, and refill?
Thanks

Message: Blue Bayou,
In this thread they say there is a special machine that flushes all the trans fluid from your system and then after changing the filters you refill with synthetic fluid:
Trans flush
BTW, Thanks for the compliment on my truck, hope this helps.

Message: BlackDak02,
I had the dealer do a BG trans. flush when I had the trans fluid changed and they used the fluid I provided, which was AMSOIL ATF. Since the truck only had 3400 miles on it we did not pull the pan and change the filter. Flushing changes everything, convertor included. Since I have a 4x4 I unfortunately did not have enough fluid with me to drain & fill the transfer case(uses the same fluid) at the same time but I will be doing that within a month when I do an oil change. Transfer case does not get flushed out when the trans is flushed. Good luck.

Message: Thanks, Big Blue, good to know that the dealer had no problem with refilling the trans with fluid other than Mopar. Hmm, I didn't know that the transfer case takes ATF, but it should be a piece of cake compared to the tranny, IMO. Mine's approaching 3K now so I want to do it soon.

Message: Blckdak,
durtydog said in the 'Tranny flush by dealer...' thread that his Durango took three gallons of fluid & it cost him $75 for the fluid but I think it was Mopar fluid. However he didn't specify what trans was in the Durango. I didn't know an automatic had that much fluid in it, alot must be in the torque converter.

14 quarts. Bring one or two extra if you are providing the fluid just to be sure there is enough. You can always return an un-opened container. Good luck.

Trust me when I say that we do believe you, but everybody that has followed these boards has had it beat into their head that the "only tranny fluid that should ever be used in Mopar 7176! accept no substitues!!".
Due to this fact, we are somewhat in disbelief... yet excited that we can use a synthetic!!

Message: I can relate my expierence with amsoil products in my 2000 5.9L and my cousin has the same year but 4.7L. We both switched engine oil, tranny fluid, transfercase lubricant, and gear lube to the Amsoil products. I have 11,000miles on it he has about 4,000miles. We both have seen an improvement in fuel usage and the trucks seem to idle easier.
Good Luck! hope you are as happy as we are.

Message: BlkDak & Blue Bayou,
I had the same reluctancy to use it also but I checked with AMSOIL concerning their ATF meeting ALL Mopar specs, even 7176 specs. They assured me it did. It's good Redline makes a compatible synthetic tranny fluid also, more choices for people. You have to be careful since all synthetics don't meet all of Mopar's specs. I have had no problems at all and I am sure if proper maintence was followed, no matter what you decided to use (meeting Mopar specs of course) you wouldn't have any problems.

Message: Allright, Im convinced! Went ahead and made the appointment to get that tranny flushed. Finally can get all the fluid off my shelf. I've run AMSOIL oil for the last 20,000 miles and haven't had a problem that I've noticed. Keep my fingers crossed even though they would have to PROVE that it was the fluid that did any damage.
