I use Mobil 1 synthetics in the motor and rear diferential. I was surprised that Mobil 1 Synthetic
ATF wasn't recommended for ATF 4 or 7176 use.
Does anyone know why that is so?

probably is a "Grabbier" type fluid (More friction at clutches) that causes the transmission to think it is applying too much pressure to the clutch servo. It then backs off the pressure to compensate and the clutches start slipping. This on/off pressure thing will destroy a transmission.I use Redline C+ in my 2000 durango and really like it.shifts nice now.

Amsoil ATF = American Synthetic Oil

For the record,

I am not going to comment on Mobil1. It brings out the flamers.

I would however like to make a couple of comments regarding ATF+4.

ATF+4 is REALLY a different fluid from ATF+3, even though it probably smells and looks the same. And, even more so when compared with any of the various Dexron "flavors", Mercon, Mercon V, Type A, Type F, etc - ESPECIALLY Type F (NO friction modifiers). Chrysler's transmissions had some severe problems until recently and ATF+4' additive package is the response that seems to finally keep them working properly.

DaimlerChrysler recommends ATF+4 as service fill for trannies that were originally designed for and filled with ATF+3. ATF+4 is a VERY highly friction modified fluid.

Read more about Mobil 1 ATF!

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF is a synthetic fluid designed that meets the demanding requirements of modern passenger vehicles. The synthetic baseoil composition enables excellent performance even in the severest of operating conditions. It offers outstanding gear shifting and power transfer performance. Versus conventional ATF fluids, the inherently high viscosity index and stability of Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF protects against thermal breakdown at high operating temperatures, while still providing outstanding performance at ambient temperatures as low as -54º C.

Features & Benefits

Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF combines synthesised hydrocarbon base oils and a superior balanced additive system to provide significantly higher levels of performance above conventional fluids. This unique, advanced technology has demonstrated extended drain, long-term friction retention, and low-temperature capability. Further, it improves overall transmission durability and cleanliness. Key features and benefits include:

Advantages and Potential Benefits

Enhanced, long-term frictional properties

Improves and extends transmission efficiency

smooth shifting performance and fuel economy

Exceptional thermal and oxidation stability

Keeps transmissions clean to extend life and performance even under severe driving conditions

Outstanding film-strength and anti-wear properties

Significant wear reduction and longer transmission life

Excellent low-temperature fluidity

Provides prompt and reliable lubrication at ambient temperatures down to -54º C

Exceptional shear stability

Viscosity retention even under the severest heavy duty, high temperature operating conditions

Compatible with mineral ATF fluids and all common seal materials

Reduced concern in top-off emergencies and excellent leakage control

Well ..... we learned 2 things today.

Amsoil guy is helpful,

and Frankie is a jerk.

Question to Frankie:

Since you are a Exxon/Mobil representative, perhaps you can tell us the base oil and additive package in your ATF fluid and it's characteristics.

My personal contribution:

I have used many products in a number of applications, both foreign and domestic vechiles. I have used them in p/s pump's, transfer cases, and trannies. I like Redline best, Amsoil next and M1 last. Redline price is insane and only justifiable if you are really abuseing the equipment.

I have the Amsoil ATF in my DTT Transmission. My Dodge Ram has 400 hp and 700 + ft\lbs of torque. Haven't had a problem yet. Also in my wife's Dakota.

I have been running Amsoil ATF for about a year now in my 45rfe with no problems. The cost is actually less than ATF+4 from the dealer. I am also pretty sure the ATF+4 is a full synthetic too. At the local dealer here it cost $7.80 per quart. Amsoil has good instructions at their site on how to do a complete fluid change. I did it when I changed mine and it's not too bad. I do recommend installing a drain plug in the pan when you have it off though. It will make it a lot easier next time to drain all the fluid before removing the pan, it's kinda messy without one. The procedure is basically drop the pan and measure how much fluid was drained. Replace filters, install pan and refill with the same amount that was drained. Disconnect one of the trans lines at the cooler and start the engine. Fluid will pump out of the line, catch it in a gallon jug so you can have a good idea how much is pumping out. At the same time another person has to be adding fluid through the dipstick hole at close to the same rate as what is being pumped out. It's not hard to do if you make some quart lines on the jug. When you've used all 14 quarts you know you've done a complete exhange. I really couldn't see a difference in color on mine but we did my frineds Z71 at the same time and he had over 90,000 and never changed so the color changed from chocolate brown to red after 12 quarts on his chevy. One thing I will say, it is very hard to get a good reading on the dipstick at the end of the procedure due to false readings from fluid on the sides of the filler tube. You almost have to wait until the next day to get a good initial reading on the cold mark and a hot reading later after the tube is clean. Anyway, it saves you about $100 over what the dealer will change you.
