Subject: 1st Gear IP: Logged
Message: I have a 97 5 speed 5.2 4x4, and I was wondering if it was necessary to start it in first gear on normal dry pavement. I learned stick in cars, and first gear was never a problem there, but now with the dakota, it takes forever to get moving starting in first then going to second. I have a K&N FIPK, and about to install a gibson catback if that makes any difference as far as this topic is concerned. Thanks for any help.

Message: You learned stick? Learn how to shift faster, or buy a lot of spare clutches and start out in second.

Message: with a 5.2 it should start off pretty damn quick in 1st, my dad has a 98 2x4 5.2 it starts off fine in 1st. You probably have something screwed up

Message: It'll get momentum going from stop alright, but it'll only go up to a little over 5 mph before it stops accelerating, no matter what. When I get it into second, it really takes off, and then in third, hehehe... But anyway, I was just wondering about the second gear idea for if I really wanted to get up and go. I can get the 1st to 2nd transition pretty quick, but just having to transition that early makes me a little slower, but I'll get over it. I just figured that first gear was the way it was for carrying a load, which it does great.

Message: Don't ride the clutch and it'll be fine. I never used 1st unless I was racing or pulling a load and it didn't bother anything on my truck. If you have the torque 2nd is definitely low enough.
