Subject: elec fan and supercharger ? on a 5.2L
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wanted to know how the 5.2L fares with an electric fan. Anyone have R&D? Preference? ETC?

Also any 5.2s running a supercharger? What brand to buy? Understand the ATI 9PSI charger has a tendency to fry headgaskets. Should I go with a 6PSI Powerdyne or a KB? By the way what do the KBs cost?

I have been looking into the same things and found:

Most fans used are the flex-a-lite Black Magic 150 or the Vipers fan assembly. Haven't heard of any Over heating problems. A supercharger might over tax it, but a small auxiliary pusher fan can be add to fix that.

As for Superchagers, I hear the powerdyne is nice<8lbs of boost. Since you have a heavy truck the kenne-bell might be the way to go. I talked to alot of 4x4s that are happy with it. I hear the only drawback is it does like too many of the normal mods. The only thing bad about the procharger that I have heard is the placement of the intercooler being too low. Everyone seems to like the paxton, one guy made 103rwhp on a 5spd 4.7 with it. Only problem with it for me is that I guy at my work broke to of them on his trans-am and thier higher cost +$400-$500 over other kits. The other kit worth considering is the T-trim vortech. I have seen alot of guys running in the low/mid 12s with it, from 94' 5.2 auto daks to a 96' 5.2l limited cherokee. I did see a comparison test in 5.0 mag. between the vortech vs. paxton base kits. The paxton produced more low-end/mid boost while the vortech had more top-end. It's really person preferance, The only reason I was looking mainly at procharger was its features (billet impellar and intercooler)thier comparsion test vs.vortech and a guy that races them has a shop near me.

Go with a Spal fan. It is not a quiet fan by any means, but a 16" will pull 2400CFM. I have used one on the truck for years, and that's all we use for racing. I believe the part number is 30102002.

Well, the reason for wanting a supercharger is to help with towing and such. I want to be able to pull my car better on the interstate (The West Virginia interstate is full of hills). I would like to go with KB (low end TQ) but understand they want over 5K for a supercharger.

cryppie,

Where can you purchase that fan? Does it come with a thermostat? ETC?

Sorry Marine1, missed your post.

I get all of my parts at wholesale from my neighbor, so not sure where they are sold retail. Try THIS

As for the thermostat, no, it doesn't come with one. Spal makes one that you can buy, but any aftermarket fan thermostat will work fine. I am using a Hayden adjustable thermostat with it, and it works great. I recommend spending the few extra dollars and get the adjustable. You can tweak it so the fan will come on only after sitting for a minute or so, then it will go off after you start driving again.
