i have the 5.9 r/t with the stock muffler on it but removed all the cats and definayely noticed a deeper and louder sound. most was because of the third cat though.

What engine do you have in your truck and what year, I have a 2002 4.7 cc 4x4 and want to know if you get any mil lights when you do this because I have wanted to do the same type of thing. I you do this (cut the third cat off) could you give me an e-mail on how it turned out? Thanks again,

Andrew

If you have the pre-cats the third one has no 02 sensors you can remove it without any problems.

I have a 2001 and there are no sensors on 3rd cat but getting it cut in front will be work as the frame is in the way.

I cut the back side off the cat at the weld, then used a pipe to break out the monolithic ceramic core being careful not to breath any of the dust, then welded it back up you cant even tell that it was tampered with for those pesky emission guys

just to be the devils advocate here....

Someone posted that the 'third' cat, isn't a cat at all, but a 'resonator'.

If it's a cat, why no 02 sensors?

I dunno, anyone?

I did that to my 2002 Dak 4.7 for a month or two. But I eventually put a Flowmaster 70 series on because I wanted dual exhaust. The stock muffler has a good sound but I like the Flowmaster better.

Cutting the third cat was not hard (for a manual tranny). Put a jack under the tranny. Loosen the two bolts holding the tranny to the cross-support. Then loosen the four bolts holding the cross-support. Take a few clips off the support for some wires and jack the tranny up a bit. Remove the support and you'll have easy access to the cat. You can cut it off and take it to a muffler shop to weld. They can't cut it off, but if it isn't there when they receive it, they won't have a problem putting a pipe on for you.

I cut mine too and the cross support is a pain in the ars. I cut the back off in about 3 minutes and it took the rest of the day to hack off the front part. I was driving around for half the day with only the cat and no muffler and I think that this sounded meaner than it does now with no main cat and the 40 series flow on it. but cutting the cat did add tons of power. I did it right after i put 33's on my truck and before i cut it my truck had lost it's low end pull. I could floor it from a stand still and get all traction...absolutely no spin at all...after i cut the cat it got a lot of low end power back....it would squeel the tires even after it had shifted into second sometimes if i floored it....but then after that i added 4.56 gears and it is faster than it was stock...wierd feeling with 33's.

Andrew I did it today was easy work with my cordless sawz, sounds a little deeper, and to clear things up this not a Cat it is a resonator and all that is is like a mini muffler to baffle the sound more than main muffler does not REQUIRED by LAW, so taking these off and gutting them out is a waste of time. just cut it off.

franlofter,

THANKS for posting that, that it's NOT a 3rd cat, but a resonator!!!!

I still have mine on my 4.7, not for long though.

I've heard that this was not a true cat converter, but we all still keep calling it the 'third' cat! go figure

Thanks again, hope everyone reads your post, you're not the first one to post that it wasn't a cat at all!

ummmm, it is a cat. i dont know wat makes u think it isnt. the dodge trucks now are made to ultra low emissions level standards from 2001 and later. this was because of the addition of precats along witht the main cat. it acts like a resonator by quieting the truck down but it does reduce emmissions so it IS a cat. also, i know this is true because when i took mine off, u could smell the fumes a lot stronger than before especially at start up.

I have to say it is definitely not a catalytic converter.....it just is a resonator with a catalyst in it that burns unburned fuel but repeat IT IS NOT A CATALYTIC CONVERTER!

:P

Look in it when you cut it off and you will see that it is definitely not a resonator....no question.

Ain't that what a "converter" is...a muffler with a catalyst in her..more or less eh?...I think that makes it a "catalytic"-"convertor"...

I brought my truck to shop today and had a 3 pipe from cats back installed with a flowmaster 40 series sounds great a little to loud for me though, but its sounds tough makes the 4.7 sound like a 5.7.
