Subject: How can I get better MPG with a 5.2l IP: Logged
Message: Hey I just bought a 1996 Dodge Dakota 4X4 with the 5.2l V8. I love the truck. I just don't like the fact that I can pass everthing but a gas station. I think a K&N unit will help. If anybody can think of anything else let me know...
Thanks
Joe

Message: Sounds obvious but stop passing everything! 8-)
I had to drive to Ottawa from London 5-6 hours. Always had to fill up 5 or 6 times. Last time I went I drove dead on 105 KPH, 5 over the speed limit, made a game of it stayed in the slow lane stayed in the shadow of the big trucks. Stopped for gas 3 times and had a little less than half a tank when I got into town.
I never realized how hard I drove until I tried to drive the speed limit.

Message: I found that putting in Autolite 3923 spark plugs and swapping the stock 195 t-stat with a 180 t-stat helped mileage somewhat.
With the stock plugs and t-stat, I believe I was averaging 20-22L/100 km, with the 3923s and 180 t-stat, it helped lower the mileage to 16-18L/100 km.
Where I live, we just had a cold snap, and my mileage plummeted to 20-25L/100 km. I am hoping that once the weather warms up, my mileage will improve as well.
Use your 4x4 frugally.
Don't tramp on the gas pedal. I hate to say it but drive like grandma. Avoid expressways or roads where speeds are 100km/h or more.
Just remember, you are driving a pickup truck (an 8 cyl. at that), and trucks will never get the kind of fuel economy a passenger car gets.

Message: It's amazing the difference driving 60 to 65 mph compared with 75 to 80 mph will make. My parent's durango with the 5.2l had the overhead display and at 60-65mph about 20mpg. Bump it up to 75 and the mileage dropped to 16mpg.
I have a 97 5.2 rc with 3.9 rears and the best I have been able to get is 20mpg.

Message: I don't think you will get any better with the 3.9L. My brother had a v6 cc 3.55 rears and got rid of it because he wasn't getting any better gas mileage than I was.

Message: Stop complaining...my overhead reads 12-13mpg average...living in New England and having some extra weight in the back for winter doesnt help her any...
I've never driven anything but a V8. 3 previous vehicles were 1970's muscle cars with 350's, the 318 gets a few mpgs better :)) its not hard to beat 9mpg! much harder to beat it in a race though :)
But check out a previous post talks about the aerodynamics of a tonneau cover impriving mileage.
Love your V8. Never go back.

Message: First of all, keep up with maintenance schedule. After this, don`t go faster than posted speed limit.-Imagine your tac yellow at 1500 rpms and red at 2000 rpms.-Try to stay around 800 and 1500 rpms[always].If you know you`ll have to brake,do not accelerate and save a double waist. Try to use momentum and not horses or torque.Trying roads that can keep speed between 30 to 50 mph is the best scenario to a great result. Don`t carry any more weigth than you really need.Have tires with correct pressure and aligned.Imagine 235 horses[V8] oppening their mouths to eat as you step on the pedal.Try to keep moving, producing a minimum amount of power.Go thru the gears[manual] asap. If you do this concentrated enough you get at least 18 mpg on average. I get 21 to 22 depending totally on concentration and desired goal. This is on averages of 5000 miles cycles, not just one tank and yes, my computer shows no discrepances at all. Also, i`m a carpenter and i carry from leaders to planks on the rack not saying about a couple of burn outs every day to "dispose" of stress for beeing so focused. After a while, this will be a lot easier, and you will be much better too.Mine is a 2000,4.7, 5sp manual, 3.92 rear, 68mmfastman T body,FIPK K&N,Gibson exaust and headers, stage 2 jet chip, 180*thermostat, removed clutch fan, all syntetic fluids and next week will have HO cams ,intake manifold and 3923 plugs. Hope this help all interested in lowering consumption. Good luck...
