Subject: 318 to 360 swap for dummies IP: Logged
Message: Ok, now i'm not the brightest guy in the world when it comes to engines, but I do know that the 360 makes more HP than the 318 (DUH!) Anyway, I have a 93 Dak with a 5.2 that has almost 131,000 miles on it. I want to put in a GOOD (not junky, old, used up) 360 in it. The problem is, I dont have a lot of money to spend and I know crate engines and any kind of new engines are $$$$$! I want to spend no more than $1800 on the engine.
So, if any one could give the dummy, I mean me, some info I would greatly apreciate it!!!!
Also, what kind of transmission should I use if I do put in a 360 and how do I get the engine and the new transmission (if needed) in the Dak?? Thanks again and God Bless!

Message: You could get a $1,300 Mopar Performance short block, have your heads freshened up, then add the Mopar Performance computer, and use the transmission you have. That should be close...may be a little more than $1,800, depending on how much work you put in the heads. However, make sure that your heads are good...to use in this project.
If your transmission is good, then a simple rebuild kit will help with the added horsepower/torque. Make sure that the flexplate is weighted for the 360 to work with your torque convetor and drop it in and go!
Your intake, throttle body, distributor, sensors, and injectors will work just fine for your application.
Plus, the Mopar short block has a R/T cam installed for a little more giddy-up-and-go!
$1,800 will get most of this completed, but I would spend a little extra for the tranny rebuild, and the head work.

Message: I second genII. I am in the process of doing the same thing to my 92 dak. But I have 188,000 on my set up now and the transmission is still strong. Maybe get the engine done save up your money and do the tranny in 5-10 months. It should last at least that long. but good luck with your rear end.

Message: Thanks for the help!! I have a few quick questions:
1. Where can I get the short block for $1300?
2. The transmission is good, so where can i get a rebuild kit for it?
3. What is the flexplate(like I said, i'm a dummy!) and how do I get weighted for the 360?
Thanks again!!!

Message: try manciniracing.com for the short block. Jet for transmission parts. and order a flywheel either racing or stock for streetablility. The main difference externally for the 360 and 318 is the 360 is externally ballanced like a balanced and blue printed engine. Use the last part if someone catches on to a swap and say that you had it bored and stroked. good luck

Message: Where are you located? I had a guy offer to build me a complete 5.9L for $1600 plus a core engine. He is in CT. I don't know if you would be interested just thought I would mention it.

Message: I live in sunny san diego california(smog law capital) but I had a guy who said he would install a race prepped 360 with a custom ground blower cam in my truck for about 3100-3500 out the door using alot of my existing parts and over doing the rebuild on the heads. But I am going to take on the swap myself. I yanked a 350 in a 70 chevy truck replaced the crank and put it back in in a day. How much harder can the fuel injection be??? all right alot of little details.

Message: hey tell no lies It was a day and fairly easy minus the sheared crank wedged into my middle finger and actually I even put the clutch on backwards. DUMBASS!!!!! It is one fuel line and about 25-35 bolts and a couple friends because that engine is heavy.backed the engine out flipped the engine on a stand. and I think you can hopefully figure out the rest.

Message: can an older (i.e. 1970's or 80's) 360 be installed in place of the original one in a '95 Ram? If not, where is the cut-off year? What is the earliest (read CHEAPEST) 360 I can use?

Message: I think that the cut off would be 92 for a 318 and 93 for a 360. but i was reading that you can use magnum heads on a pre magnum engine. i dont know if that was bull or not, no exp. with it. but if it is not in texas, michigan and definitely not california you could put any motor you want in it. but their are alot of wrecked ram's out there with 360 blocks in good condition.
