Subject: 91 5.2 Dakota Performance???? IP: Logged
Message: My 91 5.2 Dakota is starting to get tired and blowing a little smoke. I was just wondering what my options were when I rebuild it...
1. Are there any headers to fit it?
2. Can the 92-later Magnum heads be used on it?
What exactly were the changes in the engines from 91 to 92?

Message: As far as I know there weren't any changes to the magnum. There are headers for the '92 5.2. That's what I have and it's starting to do the same thing that yours is. I also have the problem of over sized tires too.

Message: You can change to the Magnum but the lifters on up have to be changed. Different heads and intake also. The magnum heads use stud for the rocker arms. Old chryslers use shaft mounted rockers. As for headers I know chrysler used to make a set for the 91 dak. If you want the magnum engine might be easier to find a donor and do a wholesale change.

Message: THe main problem is that the 1991 5.2 did not have multiport fuel injection. The '91 did not have the high rise manifold either. Thus, the problems are myriad in trying to change out your engine or use any of the '92 and after engines, performance parts etc. No mechanic in Phoenix would touch my beloved dakota with anything but a replacement long block. In addition, the local dealer said that he did not have any performance parts for the '91.

Message: I see I am not all alone on this...
Does the 91 have a two or four bbl intake?
Could I use an aftermarket aluminum intake with the Holley Projection?
Since it's an old style engine, I guess I could go to a 340, yes?
It's been a long timne since I thought about old Mopars, I guess I will have to get up to date on things like X heads and Purple cams...lol

Message: It's a 2 barrel intake but I think holley has adapters for them.

Message: No you cannot directly replace the 318 with the 340 unless you change the motor mounts, trust me I am putting a 67 block under the 91 swirl port heads and i had to buy a motor mount kit from Shumauker(pardon the spelling) Creative services. If there are any other 91 model year Dakota owners that need performance info please feel free to email me. There is alot of info that I could use as well. Share the wealth!
