 Subject: Oil Pressure Question.

At idle the oil pressure in my 2000 Dakota 4.7 is below the 40 PSI mark. Anything above idle it moves right up to 60 PSI. Is my idle too low at 625 - 650 RPM or is this common to these trucks. The oil was just changed and is fresh. The previous owner put in a K+N filter and I was wondering if maybe he dropped the idle down? I don't want to have problems due to poor lubrication.

Your oil pressure is fine.. It is well documented that an engine only needs 5 psi per 1000 rpm. I personally like to see at least 20 psi at idle. If you are getting a little under 40 psi at idle you are definately ok..

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have had Dakotas before but not a 4.7 engine. Everything I had seen, at least in the world of hot rods, suggests that the oil pressure should be higher than lower. If your sure of your source and feel that it is OK then I can accept that and appreciate your response. Thanks.

It will be higher on cold days when your oil is thicker, but from the numbers you gave here, you are just fine. Your idle and op are normal. Enjoy!

The other morning I was traveling to work when I recieved the check gauges light,not check engine, and noticed the oil pressure gauge drop off. Purchased a new sending unit and installed. Gauge started reading wonderful pressure. Problem solved right...wrong. The next day I took the truck out and 15 miles into my travels the check gauges light came on again and the oil pressure gauge dropped off to zero. The whole time this was happening I was constantly checking my oil only to find that I was not losing any oil. At this point I deemed that it must be some kind of sensor problem and kept on going because there was no check engine light and the truck made no notion of having a problem(pinging,ticking,etc.)All at once the truck began to start having a lifter type ticking noise and I let off the gas and when I did the most horrible metal raking noise began. I pulled off the side of the road, had the truck towed in only to be told that I will be needing a new engine. $4300.00 worth of damage with no severe indications that such a thing was about to occur. The truck has only 68,000 miles and I am totally distraught with DODGE...................any help with how to not get screwed on this would be appreciated. $26,000 for a vehicle that won't make 100K is a freaking crime and I just can't come to terms with how Dodge can just simply say we're sorry.

Eh ? My uncle and aunt have a Durango... I think it's a 2000. Almost a year ago.. the engine bit the dust. Dodge says blah blah, something oil.. blah blah. Uncle and Aunt show them receipts of every time they had the oil changed. Dodge says, "Well.. we feel dumb now... here's your new engine on us. Please drive through." Warranty is a beautiful thing.

I have a 99 Dodge Durango it just turned 81000 miles. Last July(about 4 months ago) the check guages light came on and the oil pressure went to 0. I would shut the vehicle off and restart it. The oil pressure would return to normal then after 1/2 a mile or so the same would happen. I took it to a garage and they replaced the sending unit. This seemed to have fixed it but a week later it came back. I went ahead and purchased a new oil pump but did not install it. I instead ran a engine flush through it. The problem went away for over four months and he vehicle has been 1/2 way across the country and back without any issues. Last night the problem resurfaced. As my wife left the house the check guages light came on and the oil pressure went to zero. No knocking or pinging sounds though. I once again flushed the system but the problem occured 5 more times in a 6 mile run. Then mysteriously disappeared. As of yet is has not happened. Any ideas on the next step? I have seen this listed several times on the net but............Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would replace the oil pump just to be in the safe side. My worse nightmare is to find out that the oil wasn't circulating through the engine until it gave up. Even thought I always check the gauges sometimes I fear to trust them too much! I wish engineers had a better way to warn the driver that there is something wrong with the vehicle before major repairs have to be done. Or design a sensor(s) that measures lubrication status thru the entire engine. I don't know! I just feel the frustration of David Lewis. I know for sure it would be devastating for me that after all that hard work to finally be able to afford a $26,000 truck that after a long time of thinking, you decided to invest this much money cause you were tire of dealing with the struggle of old unreliable vehicles. I think is very "Heartless of DODGE to just say "sorry you are out of warranty so you are out of luck".I think that if buying a new car was a thing of luck like a lotto type of thing, no one would like to risk $26,000 on a car therefore auto companies wouldn't have any business. Something for the manufactures to think about. Just my .02 cents on sympathy.

Have heard that pinging/tapping sound caused by low oil pressure is the hrydralic lifters on camshaft becoming oil starved. SHUTDOWN ENGINE before it seizes! Maybe problem is an intermitently clogged oil filter. Spend a couple extra bucks and get a good one!

I wanted to add a slightly different bit of information then Tommithy gave. When I went to trade school and aprenticed 8-10 PSI at idle and 5 psi per 1000 RPM's was deemed minium for warranty work. It is kind of like the USRDA it is not the amount of nutrient to ensure vibrant life. It is the minium to keep your teeth from falling out and your bones from breaking. For long term durability you realy want 15-30 PSI at idle and 10 psi for every 1000 RPMS. You should start by passing around 98 PSI. Volume at any given pressure is important as well. The lower end can survive at idle with 5 psi for quite a long time put lifter start to tick once the pressure drops below 8 and the valve train componets will start to die quickly at 5 psi. The most important thing is to make sure pressure increases with RPM!!!! Dodge has never been know for it's great oiling system. The gerotor design that they are currently useing on the 4.7 and other engines is by far the best style of oiling pump around. This style of pump seldom wear out and when they do it is normaly isolated to the backing plate. I have seen AMC's, Chevy's and Toyota's with this style pump that were still within spec.(barely) after 200,000 to 300,000 miles. Normaly the ones that used a backing plate were the ones that were worn out. The only ones that I have seen wear the concentric gears out were sludged up and abused badly.

well here is a good one for ya i to have a dodge darando 99 80000 miles 360 engine i was having same problem with my oil pressure droping to 0 took it to dodge dealer they said engine sludge wrong they flushed the engine for 300.00 bucks and i was out the door only for it to keep happening well i took it my shop and we dropped the oil pan took the valve covers off and the inside of theses are powder coated from the factory and are now peeling off and the paint chips are getting into the oil pan and stopping the oil flow to the engine called dodge and they never heard of this befor so sorry about your luck so its going to coat me about 1500.00 to fix this proplen myself so check to see if your iol has paint chips in it its not sludge

I have a 99 dakota with 56,000 miles. 5.2L my oil pressure sits at about 35psi from idle to 5000rpm. so i've been watching it. i noticed as i hit bumps, it occasionally will come up to about 60psi. i'm thinking it's wiring. although my engine has a high pitched whine that changes with rpm, so, hopefully it's not related!

wow reading this has made me feel someone can help me cause I am a single middle ages female and I have been around shop my whole life with my dad who recently died and helped when I had a problem so I have noone else to ask what to do so hope someone can help. I was driving tonite and all of a sudden my check gages light came on on my 1997 dodge dakota pickup then the oil pressure gage dropped to 0 went a few miles and the gage went back up and warning light went off but then a few miles on down the road it did the same thing again I was only a few miles from home and made it there. Checked oil and it is fine so what is my problem someone help please

I have a '00 Durango had the same problem as every one above. I had some lifter noise so I shut it off and had someone tow me to some relatives house. I bought a new oil pump and prepared to install thinking the worst, I had heard of sludge blocking the screen to the pump and also in some cases carbon build up block the screen. Dropped the oil pan and everything was clean and in good shape, replaced the oil pump and the lifter noise cleared up. However my pressure guage was still dropping out even when I hooked my own guage to the truck. I am currently in the process of replacing the sending unit and I'll keep you posted. I also heard that you will get sludge build up in the dodges if you do not change the oil religiously at 3000 to 3500. Well I'll keep ya posted

I have just recently purchaced a 1998 dodge durango. I was driving home and after about 25 miles I stoped at a stoplight. My check guages light came on and I noticed the oil pressure at zero. I immediately put the vehicle in neutral and the oil pressure returned to normal.I took the truck straight home, only about another 5 mile with no problems until I stopped again.Once again no oil pressure. How come this only happens when the vehicle is at operating temperature and in gear at a stop?I took the vehicle the very next day to have an engine flush done and this corrected the problem for about 25 min. What is my next course of action? Should I let them remove the oil pan and clean the oil intake screen for sludge? And if so is this only a temporary fix? Or will it at least give me another 20 or 30 thousand miles before having to repeat the whole process?

mine ended up being the pickup screen but it was so stopped up that it messed up my oil pump had both replaced and everything is fine now

I've got the same problem as everyone else seems to have. 99 Durango, 318.
Wife came in, told me the vehicle has no oil pressure. I went out, checked the oil, it was OK. So I started it up, at idle pressure was 30-40 psi. All at once it dropped to zero like the gauge had been unplugged.
I wish I'd have known about the problem before I wasted my money on this vehicle. We bought it with 50k and have only had it a year. Unbelievable and unacceptable that this problem seems to be happening to A LOT of Durangos.

Check gauges light, then replacing the sensor and at some point in the near or not so near future seeing the check gauges light come on again and watching the oil pressure drop to zero is a classic symptom of a very significant problem. The oil pickup screen is too small. If you use "cheap oil" or are tardy with oil changes this screen is VERY EASILY clogged, and if you need to clean it, might as well replace the oil pump.

I HAVE A 97 DODGE 1500 WITH A 318. MY OIL PRESSURE JUST DROPPED TO ZERO THE OTHER DAY. I AM GOING TO REPLACE THE OIL PUMP MYSELF. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF I CAN DROP THE OIL PAN ALL THE WAY OFF WITHOUT RAISING THE MOTOR?

No, unfortunately Dodge made it so that the motor mounts have to be unbolted, and the motor and tranny have to be raised with a floor jack to clear the cross member. I did mine myself and it took 6 hours. The hardest part was getting the motor angled properly to reinstall the motor mounts.
