They looked like plastic shavings and some long pieces of carbon and other samll carbon pieces. I don know alot of inspecting the rod caps? What should they look like and excatly where are they located.

i can't think of anything in the motor that is plastic off hand. when you have the oil pan off, just look around where the bearings are, both main and rod. sometimes you can see shavings peeling off.
the three motors that i have seen with main bearing issues i was able to see parts of the bearing without removing the caps.

Well I've got another issue now. I drove the truck Saturday evening and truck ran fine except for the oil pressure gage issue. I got in the truck Sunday morning and the truck acted like the battery was weak. I finaly boosted it off and the truck would start but as soon as you let off the gas the truck will go dead. Any ideas?

92 dakota sport-O.K. so now I'm really confused. I just read every post and it doesn't sound like there is a definitive answer to the oil pressure question. I'll try the clean-up routine first. But I have another question, My fan blower motor diverts the A/C to the floor when I accelerate? Vaccuum?

SinaSiadat - The starter problem is probably the brushes on the motor... I'd just buy a new (recondidtioned ) one and pop it in.

Or you can usually replace the brushes too.
They make the contact between the starter body and the spinning insides.

Same thing has happened to my 1997 dakota. It began in 2004. Took it to the dealer and told me the pump needed changed. It only had 61000 miles. Couldnt believe it. Well it is a year and a half and 14000 miles later and the problem has reoccured. It would seem to me with everyone here with the same problem there would have been some sort of recall. Does anyone know a perminent fix to this problem?

Sinasiadat, do you have headers on your engine? I had headers on my 440 GTX and they were so close to the starter that the heat was always causing the starter to burn out. Or you could have a bad solenoid. that would casue a clicking like u said. But 1st, try cleaning the battery terminals. I've had clicking like that and after cleaning the terminals the problem went away. My jeep had the solenoid on the firewall, but some vehicles have the solenoid on the side of the starter. If worse comes to worse, put an old Model T crank starter on the front of your engine. LOL

I have a '99 Durango with the 318. Same problem with the oil pressure. I've been fighting it for almost 2 years. After changing the oil and filter the first three times it happened, I dropped the pan and changed the pump. It was a big job, taking 5 or 6 hours. I had to drop the front axle and raise the motor to get the pan off. There was a lot of sludge, but no metal that I saw. I noticed no problems for about 6 months, then it started again. I flushed the motor and changed oil again. That has been the only remedy I have used as I don't want to go through pulling the pan again.

My 4.7 has over 118,000 miles, and I'll bet it has NO sludge.

When I changed the cams, (overhead, 1 cam each head), there was not ANY buildup, sludge, etc, none. That was at about 30K, but with regular MObil 1 changes, I'll bet it still has none.

I have my 99 5.2 4x4 Dakota CC . 95 Plymouth Mini Van 3 L and 94 Dodge LE van 5.2. I'm doing ONCE A YEAR oil/filter changes . Amounts to 7,500 miles on each rig give or take a few. My kid and myself did the yearly change Friday last on all three. The oil in all rigs smelled nice and all drained honey colored oil. using my scope camera inserted in the valve cover, there is no carbon/sludge sign at all. Inserting it through the drain plug, again everything is clean. I do not know if it is the oil/filter combo I'm using or my driving habits which I consider to be conservative, No racing and at the same time I still drive with the flow of traffic. I know the camera scope is maybe getting to high tech but it is a left over from my shop that is just to valuable to sell. cheap one today is 400 plus bucks. Going deeper here. I have never had a rig that developed even a tiny sludge problem and I see no magic in this. I never ever use any oil additives of any kind. Just let the oil do it's job as intended.

Own a 2003 Dodge Dakota QuadCab 4x4 5.9L - Coming back from work check engine light and check oil light came on. Oil pressure gauge went to zero. Pulled over and check oil. Oil in safe zone. Restarted engine and oil pressure gauge went back to normal. Drove few miles, same thing happen again. Pulled over and check oil again. Oil in safe zone. No leaks found under the engine. This time, truck would not restart just ignition clicking sound. Had truck towed to Dodge dealer where truck was purchased. Related to Service Manager the circumstances. Next day, met with Service Manager. Said the engine froze and needed a new engine. Quoted a price of $8300.00 to get it fixed. Price included all costs and taxes. Is this reasonable or am being robbed? Could engine have really frozen (seized) based on circumstances? Mechanic made a diagnose base on what I told them. Any response appreciated.

Myron,

Who does your oil changes? I don't trust anyone, as I've heard of shops charging for an oil and filter change, when none was done, etc.

If you pulled over, and the motor was running fine, then I doubt it seized. Have you tried jumping it?, as in a low battery?

I only use MObil 1, and the walmart brand filters, my 2001 4.7 has over 120,000 miles on it.

At least get another opinion. Will the crank turn over with a wrench on the pulley?

"Mechanic made a diagnose base on what I told them" do you mean the mechanic didn't even touch the truck and diagnosed a frozen engine? if that's the case get your truck outta there and find another mechanic.

i'd really look for a second opinion. like Todd said, could be just a dead battery. but the oil pressure would then have to be looked at. first thing to do when a gage starts doing that and after checking the oil level is check the pressure with a mechanical gage.

Thanks for the reply, TexasTodd and daddio.

I do my own oil changes and lube job with name brand products that the manual calls for. I haven't check the battery yet but will. The truck is still at the shop so I have not touch it yet. I was suspicious of the Service Manager's answer when the diagnose was made W/O touching the truck. I thought it was just an easy way out to make money and put in a new engine. I'll tow the truck home where I can take a look at it and also have another mechanic looked at it.

Thanks again.
