Subject: 1999 5.2 pinging IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1999 Ext cab 4x4 that has a problem. When I am going up hills or sometimes just down the road it pings severely, like when you have bad gas. Sometimes I lose a cyclinder all together. When I let off the gas then feather back in it clears up. The problem is getting worse. I did have the valley pan gasket problem back in 2000 when the truck had about 15,000 miles on it. The gasket was replaced and so were the plugs. I have since replaced the plugs again at about 33,000 miles. There is 40,000 on it now. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: mine was blown and i didnt even know it,
just look down the TB (with the engine off..hehe) and if there is oil on the plenum floor, its blown
mine would detonate a little, then i switched to a 180 degree T-stat, and one step colder plugs, and it helped a lot

Message: It could be a belly-pan. The misfire could also be a bad lead (plug wire).
Check the belly pan for oil by looking down the open bores of the TB, with a flashlight. If there's anything more then just a bit of oil (you can expect some from the crankcase breather under WOT), then it's blown again.
If that checks out OK, go through your spark-plug wires. On a '99, I would replace them, as well as the cap and rotor.
Pull the plugs while you're at it, and see if there's any sign of fouling. You might as well change them, since you're only talking about eight dollars or so.
Going to a 180 degree thermostat, as kota on 20's suggests, is a good idea, as is dropping the heat range on the plugs. Many here swear by the Autolite 3923's, which are a standard-tip plug (as opposed to the projected-tip plugs that the factory installs). I have both the 180-Tstat, and the 3923's on my '99 CC 5.2, and have no detonation problems what so ever.

Message: Had the same problem with mine... the dealer flashed the pcm?? Not really sure what the deal was but it doesn't do it anymore... I've heard using the autolite 3923's helps with any pinging problems too. Good luck!

Message: the intake manifold has a pan that bolts to the bottom. the gasket that goes in between the two leaks. you can get another one at the dealer, or maby a parts store.
you will also have to get a intake manifold gasket set, because you have to take the manifold off to change the gasket. the cheapest place i have found the manifold gasket set is at summit for $22
