Hello fellow Dakota owners.

This is my last resource to discover a whine that comes from my 2000 4.7L Dakota.

Maybe someone else knows, cause my mechanic and I can't pinpoit it.

Happens on accelleration in any gear, kinda sounds like a power strearing pump whine.
How loud depends on the weather. Does not seem to like damp conditions like fog.

ALSO... being in Canada, there is a loud grind noise on cold starts in -10 degrees and below.
Dodge tells me it's normal, but I find that hard to believe.

Any takers?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

This is the third thread in as many days concerning this noise. My truck (00 R/T) makes the same noise, and I just left it with a friend who has a transmission shop and is heavy into Mopars. He thinks it's the converter. If it is in fact the converter, he'll have a new one in my truck and ready to go by mid-afternoon tomorrow. I'll post tomorrow and let you know what the noise is.

Mine does the same thing. I think it's the overdrive unit. Every Chrysler AOD equipped vehicle I have ever owned made this whine. It's normal and it's annoying but it's not a problem. Just crank the tunes. It usually goes away when the tranny reaches normal operating temp. If not take it in and make sure the line pressures are correct. Also, there has never been a Chrysler built that has liked damp or fog, at least none that I've owned over the last 22 years, but they're getting better ;<).

As for the crunch on starting, a buddy of mine with the 4.7 seems to think that it's something to do with either the cam chain tensioners or the starter ring gear. His dealer reassured that there was nothing to worry about. I've never heard a Mercedes start cold but I wonder if they make the same crunch.

BTW...I posted about "wierd noises" from the 4.7 and I was assailed as a lunatic and an idiot by the 4.7 tofossi. Just expect a backlash when stating that the 4.7 does anything but sip gas and pure like a kitten on a saucer of milk. I'm holding out for a 5.7 HemiDakota.

Clingman, C_Campbell... Much thanks for he feedback. I'll be sure to pass this info on to my mechanic friend, let him take a look.

And for those "lunatics" who are gonna blast me for talking smack about the 4.7, make no mistake, I love it, just has some querks I'd like chrysler to rid of if I'm gonna spend that kinda money.

Thanks for the heads-up C_Campbell ;)

Well here's the deal, my converter had started to go south. New converter = no funny noise.

Duncan I'd say before you go throwing a new converter in your truck make certain that we're talking about the same noise. You said that your truck was making the noise while accelerating... mine made the noise any time it was in gear, including stopped while in gear. If yours does that, then it's time for a new converter. Good luck man.

Clingman - not all the time thank god, just while accelerating. But now that C-Campbell mentioned it... I do believe it does go away, or at least is not as loud when the truck increases in temp. I'll keep a listen next time. I haven't noticed, cause I try to forget about it and move on. But I'll have the converter checked and relay your suggestion(s).

Thanks guys... you're all much more help then my dealer is.

dodge2112 - I hear ya on that grind. Up here in Canuck land with a winters as low as -30 deg.Cel. You can imagine how loud it is. And you'd be right. The colder, the louder and longer. Gotta be dead cold, and it only happens once (start it once, hear it, start it again and it's fine).

If you find what it is, regardless if dodge says it fine or not, lemme know... cause it's embarassing.
