Message: Hello all,
Sorry for posting a question that has probably been answered already, but after about 10 pages of searching, my eyes were beginning to blur!! Ok, here's the question: I have a 97 CC 5.2l and want to replace the stock muffler with a dynomax Ultraflow Stainless steel. Could someone please tell me the correct part number to use on the stock pipes and with minimal mods from the muffler shop?? I would sure appreciate it!
Thanks!
OJ

Message: I think you have 2.5" in and 2.5" out. As long as you match those, the muffler shop should be able to make it fit. If you want to help, crawl underneath and measure the length of your current muffler and get the closest you could find. You should be able to find some sites that list the Dynomax mufflers by their dimensions.
I replaced my stock muffler with these guidelines and got the Gibson which was a few inches shorter than stock. The muffler shop was able to just add a small piece of pipe to fit the muffler. Cost $20 for them to install.

Message: That is a good idea, but was the piece the muffler shop installed stainless steel? I would hate to go through all that only to have a regular steel piece in the system that will eventually rust out.
Thanks,
OJ

Message: Yeah -- stainless as far as I know. Was put on about 2 years ago, and I look at about every 3 months. No sign of excess corrosion yet.

Message: Cool. I called the muffler shop here and they told me they don't usually work with stainless. I was successful in getting a part number from Dynomax on the Ultra flow SS. It's just a tad short, but I'm going to put a polished stainless tip on the tail pipe, so the excess they cut off of that will be used to fill in for the 2" shorter muffler.

Message: How do you like the Dynomax OJ? I also have a '97 CC and was considering the Dynomax Ultra Flow. Is it very loud?

Message: i have a 97 5.2L 5spd 2x4 reg cab. i have the dynomax ultra flo for about 2 years. first do it yourself, dont pay a shop. and dump it before the rear axle. the muffler is about 60 bucks here, but i switched the boxes at the store and put it in a 15 dollar glasspack muffler box. then i used a sawzall, and cutt off my old muffler. i put the new one on, 2.5in i think, and used 2 clamps and a lil exhuast seal goo on it. BAM! its sounds really good but very loud, even inside my truck, but i love it, at idle, its not as throaty as lets say a GT stang, but whenever im on the pedal, it roars like crazy, 2 cops told asked me if i even have a muffler or cat. anyways i think i will go to a shop soon, get a custom side exhaust and have the cat cut off. so to anwser your question, yes its a good sounding muffler and i think flowmaster, gibson, mbrp, pacesetter, magnaflow all sound the same and have similar gains, whos cares who makes it. just spend the 60 bucks and do it yourself, b/c later if u want to blow 250+ on a catback u wont regret this.

Message: Chris,
I haven't even purchased the muffler yet (I know, it's been a while since my post). I had some other things come up that took financial priority (home repairs :() As for what Chris Reynold said about his, I can't wait to get one and put it on mine. I did some checking since my original post and found that it would be a better idea to use the 17288. It is longer and it would be easier to install a little longer muffler than to piece in pipe for a shorter one. The only other thing needed then is a clamp/hanger that goes around the muffler and hooks into the stock rubber hanger. You can find one at oddballparts.com (I think).
