Subject: Engine/trans noise... ? IP: Logged
Message: Well I have searched through 40 or so pages of posts and found nothing so here's my question.
'00 R/T RC, 70k miles. I am getting a funny sound from the lower engine area, ONLY when the truck is in gear. The sound follows engine RPM, and goes away the instant the truck is put in park or neutral. One person asked me if I had a gear drive... that pretty well describes the sound (although it is not as loud as a gear drive). It is easy to notice though, and started about 3 months ago. It is very gradually getting louder. The truck runs great, shifts fine, and is not losing any power.
Does anyone have any ideas? One person seems to think it's an alternator bearing... but if it was an alternator bearing it would make the sound regardless of whether the truck is in gear or not... right? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Message: HHmmm, funny... Mine (2000 QC 4.7) has a fast clicking noise for about 2 seconds when I take it out of park. Ive also heard it for a few seconds during shifts while driving beside a wall in an alley.

Message: The noise I am talking about is definitely NOT the normal clicking while going into gear...
This is more of a "gear whine" type noise that is heard any time the truck is in gear. No one has any ideas at all??

Message: Really, I will have to get that checked out then. Are you talking about the torque converter?

Message: Yes Mike the torque converter. I treated the problem just in time (nice way of saying that my neglicenge almost cost me big). Metal from the converter was starting to go through the pump... ruined a bushing on the pump, but the pump and the rest of the trans were okay. Another couple hundred miles and I would have been buying a whole helluva lot more than just a torque converter.
