I'm about finished with the 255/65R15 Eagle LS tires that came with my 2000 4.7 (4x2).
Done a little research and people absolutely rave about the Komho Ecsta STX and the Yokohama Avid S/T -- both come in 275/60R15 which is just 1/4" shorter than the Eagles I have now.
Any experience with these Komho or Yokohama tires? I'd like something that'll last more than 30000 miles. Appreciate any inputs. Thanks.

I have some 255/50/17 Kumho STX's on my R/T. Can't say that I love them, but for the price, they have decent traction and handling, and are wearing extremely well for the abuse I put them through. I would bet that with normal driving they shoudl last you at least 30K. Mine have about 10K of hard hard miles and are still over half tread.

Steve, I went through the same quandary just a few weeks ago. I decided to go for the Yokos, shipped from the Tirerack. Then, I ran into some problems; they did not have the 275/60/15s in stock at the nearest warehouse (Delaware), nor at the second closest (Indiana). They had a set in Louisiana. The shipping from there would have been almost $100, so I elected to try a few local shops.
They all told me the same thing, The Yokohama Avid S/T in 275/60/15 was discontinued, and only the Tirerack had them!
I considered the Kuhmo's, but in the process of price shopping, I got a great deal on a set of BFG Radial T/As $385 installed & balanced, at a local tire shop.
I've only had them on for two weeks or so, but I can tell you that they kick the Eagle LS's ass all over the place in ride, handling, and wet traction! I am not disappointed.
Oh, BTW, I'm recommending that you look into a set of fender flares (if you do not have them already), as the 275's stick out enough to warrant them!

Fubar512, I had wondered because the local shops have had trouble finding the Yokos. Yoko makes the Avid in 255/70/15 which might be okay -- and the shipping is much more reasonable. Looks like you got a great deal on the Radial T/As.
I'll keep looking to see if I can find these or a good deal on the Kuhmos. Been to 3 local shops and they keep pushing Coopers on me.
I added a set of flares about 2 years ago. Had some warranty service at the dealer and asked about the price for flares while I was there. They were on sale for $129/set. Couldn't pass that up.

Steve, the 255/70/15 are a bit more then an inch taller then the 255/65/15's, and will indicate 2.5 mph less then true speed, at 70 mph.
No big deal, just making sure that you were aware of that fact.

One more question for you since you just added this type of tire?. Did you note a change in your gas mileage when you went from the 255 to the 275 width?

I'm glad that you asked. I was expecting a bit of drop, due to the possibility of increased rolling resistance. The last two tank fulls have allayed my fears. Mileage is still the same, though I have not taken any long trips to verify any mpg changes at highway speeds (I've gotten as much as 18.8 mpg at 65 mph, on cruise control).

Try www.discounttiredirect.com or www.tirerack.com for the Kumho's. Also, if you have a local Discoutn Tire store(America's Tire in CA) they will match the internet price.

I have a set of kumho Ecsta STX's. Mine are 265/60/17 with about 6000 miles on them. I have to give them two thumbs up. They handle well and have kung-fu grip fo-sho. The ride can get a little squirrely around rough curves and corners, but thats kind of the norm for wider tires. I've never had them in the snow so I can't tell you how they handle. Whatever you decide I do recommend getting your tires siped. Helps with traction, stopping, and tire life. Not a bad deal for seven bucks a tire.

Thanks for the replies. Checked at 7 local tire shops and only one gets Kumho tires, and he DOESN'T get the ECSTA STX. Very much the same story with the Yokohama tires. I can get them from TireRack, but I'm a little concerned that if something goes wrong and I lose a tire for any reason, I have to wait while TireRack gets me a new tire. So I'd rather have a tire that I know I can get quickly and locally.
My local mechanic, who I've trusted the last 8 years, is pushing the Cooper Brands -- specifically MasterCraft. He can give me the MasterCraft Avenger G/T in 275/60/15 for $93/tire -- a performance tire like the Eagle LS. He can also get the Courser HTR (general OEM replacement tire for trucks) in 265/75/15 for about $102 each. Similar to the price I would pay for the Yokos and less than Radial TA or the Kumhos
Think I might go with one of these (note that I keep a 1 year-old in the back seat now so most of my high-speed cornering days are finished!). The Coursers are a little tall and would throw off my spedometer by about 4 mph when travelling around 70. Tread design looks similar to the radial TA. Never seen the Avengers on a truck, but I've also never heard of a tire that people like less than the Eagle LS.

Don't you have a spare tire?? I know my dakota came with one. Just use your spare tire while you wait on the replacement from Tire Rack. And your local store that sells Kumho's should be able to get the STX's. If they have an account set up with Kumho, they should be able to order any tire Kumho makes. Maybe the STX's are too new, and they haven't updated thier Kumho catalog that they have in the shop. Do you have a local America's Tire store??

Oh of course . . . definitely planning to get 5 new tires since all 5 of mine are about worn down. I have even considered that and whether I should just get the Kumhos or Yokos anyway -- afterall, if I'm in an accident an lose 2 tires, I'm probably going to be without my truck for a week anyway. Still
No local Americas tire store. NTB and Sears said they couldn't get Kuhmo. Conrads could get them but not the STX -- maybe you're right about them not having a current catalog but the response was that they are "not available yet".

Only problem with getting one of the Kumho's for a spare is they are directional tires, so depending on how it's mounted, it wouldn't be recomended to run on both sides. Might be better off keeping one of the stock tires as a spare.

I have a '99 R/T I have tried bf goodrich 255/50/17 and Toyo 285/60/17 no good in rain. I am now running a 275/50/17 Falken. Great wet traction and dry. Same height as the stock goodyears.

I hated my Falkens 275/50/17. Very poor traction compared to others I have ran on my truck. The 420 treadwear of them makes for good tread wear, but not as good of traction compared to others with lower tread wear numbers.

Well, my mechanic offered to bring in a set of Mastercraft Avenger G/Ts and a set of Mastercraft Courser HTRs so I could look at them (and he'll return them if I don't want them). Not sure what good looking at them will do, but he is really pushing these HTRs. He even offered to take the wheels off of HIS truck and put them on mine so I can see how HIS HTRs run. Good guy.
Anyone tried these Avengers? They are very similar to Cooper Cobra G/T (made in the same factory too).
Also -- is there a reason to be concerned that the Avenger is a "car tire" while the HTR is a "truck tire". I think the only difference is the sidewall thickness, but I don't know how that affects performance.

Just for your info I replaced my factory tires with Eagle GT II's 275/60/15 and have about 8k miles on them and they seem to be wearing good. I don't beat on them racing or hard turning but they are nece riding tires. They have a different sound when going down the road then the originals but not bad.

The Eagle GTs are listed as a car tire -- just like the Eagle LS. I don't think I'll have any trouble with any decent performance tire on my truck. I don't drive too aggressively either -- I just want to stay clear of excessive roadnoise with as good a wet traction as I can find.
Still interesting that I have to yet to talk to anyone who replaced the OE Eagle LS and was disappointed in their new tires.

I have a set of Dunlops that I love. 295/40/R20 The dunlops sp 9000 are great tires and have great traction. They are really good in the corners because the tires are rounded off.

Everyone,
Thanks for the inputs on this thread. I ended up putting Mastercraft HTRs 31x10.5x15 on my truck. Not an aggressive tire, but they ride great, add an inch or so of height, and the look great on the 4x2.
