Subject: Do I have Auto Locking Hubs? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dak, 318 v8, 4 speed auto - tranny, and NV231 (I believe) transfer case. Do I have auto locking hubs? If so where are they located at and when do they engage?
Thanks!!!

Message: Excellent! I was under the impression that if you didn't have to manually lock the wheels that you had the auto locking hubs. Is there any special reason why they did this without them?
At work we have 3 dodges. Mine 99 Dak, a 97 Ram with 360, and another 97 Ram with the 318. The other 318 combo like mine, same tranny and tranfer case also has the font axles turning all the time, but the 360 combo has auto locking hubs. We can get under the truck and turn the drive shaft while the wheels are sitting on the ground and outa of 4x4.

Message: The rams have axle disconnect. No actual hubs. You should be able to turn the driveshaft in the rams in 2wd if not there is something wrong.

Message: Okay, so let me see if I understand this now. When I shift the transmission into a 4x4 mode, do I then have all available power right there and then to the front axles?

Message: Do not forget that "all available power" is to the ONE wheel with the LEAST traction on each axle.
If you have LSD then the you should expect BOTH rears and ONE front to receive power (torque).
SURPRIZE: you NEVER have true "four wheel drive"

Message: Okay, cool. Yes, I understand that the power will travel through the less resistant wheel. I do however have the LSD in the rear. Could one per say install one in the front end as well?

Message: you could, but expect some wheel hop when turning the truck, plus your gonna notice a decrease in mpg if you care at all. Wait a sec. this is a truck I forgot, mpg shouldn't matter. better of with air lockers up front, like arbs or something

Message: I was under the impression that 90% of 4x4's front difs were limited slip (or locking). I've had 3 4x4 trucks and when all of them were in 4wd, and the wheels were turned on dry pavement, the wheels would hop (because one would be attempting to turn faster than the other).
