Subject: K&N air intake

Hey all, I've got a 94 dakota with a 318 and am going to put a k&n open air element on it to replace the snorkle. I was curious about the sizes that I could fit under the hood. I want to go with a 11inch diameter and 3.5 inch filter element height but am curious if I'd actually be able to fit that on the engine without the hood crushing it into the intake. Anyone have any thoughts on this or experience with a similar intake? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I have one from my 94' I would be willing to sell. It's a K&N FIPK for the older daks and it doesn't touch the underside of the hood. I believe it is somewhere between 2"-2.5"

What diameter is it? I'm also looking at a 14' diameter drop base with a 3 inch filter that would be able to fit perfectly, plus get one of the breathable lids for it that K&N makes. Would this be too much surface area for the air intake, or is lots better?

I think it is 13"-13.5" dia. One thing yo umight have to do is bend the drop base a bit to get it to fit under the hood. I had to do this with the base for my ram air setup. I have been curious about the breathable lids as the open element K&N set ups tend to be noisier since the air comes at the TB from the side. If the air can flow strait down it might be quieter.

I've seen many dakota's running 14 inch k&n filters before and saw that even mikes dakota at mikesdakota.com is running a 14 inch filter. I figured out they must be running 3 inch elements so I was curious how they got it to fit. Normally a 3 inch element would be stuck in the underside of the hood, so how did they get it to fit on the dakota?? My aut parts store won't carry anything smaller than a 3 inch that means I have to go with a 14' x 3' with a 7/8" drop. Will the drop base fit on the stock throttle body? I'm scared that the hoses and crap ontop of the intake won't give it enough room. Does anyone have any suggestions or experiences with getting a 3inch high K&N filter element to fit on their dakota??

The other place to look is ramairbox.com
They have varying drop bases and filters, as well as different lids.

recently replaced the stock airfilter with a K&N drop in style on my 99 Dak. 318-5.2. It didnt make much diff so i removed the plastic tube from the air box. Nice throaty sound now and a little more pep. Is it ok to run this way or should i run a tube out next to the radiator. Just wondering the best way to get performance for cheap.
Thanks

Keep the intake tube, cold air is better. Just remove the plastic bug deflector blocking the entrance.

Thanks for the info but i still seem to be getting better performance with the plastic 3" tube completely removed from the bottom area of the intake box. I'll also remove the rubber bug shield next to the radiator and see if that helps. How about a small heat shield made from aluminum sheeting running from the side of the air box to the side of the radiator to limit heat being drawn off the engine? I have also tried using 3" aluminum dryer duct hose running from the air box opening to the opening next to the radiator. That worked a little better but still not as good as no tube at all. Just was wondering what anyones thoughts were on this.
mmx...thanks.
