Subject: noise from the drivetrane IP: Logged
Message: Alright heres my problem, when i get on it there is somesort of noise, kinda like a clicking/slipping/which you can feel on the floor board and hear it. The transmition is new and has no problem with it, i had the rear end checked out and they said the gears were a little loose (hardly at all), they were stumped at it also. what could it be drive shaft, or a U-joint? please help me i know its getting worse.

Message: I had the same thing happen but only when I romped on it in a corner. I heard the same "slipping" noise and felt a vibration in the floorboard. Also, it seemed like the tranny didn't want to engage, it just kinda...lagged I guess is the word. I have a '99 5.2L 4x4, Auto. Torque converter maybe?

Message: Ponder, 4x4, is it full time? If yes, have you checked the CV joints? Those are in the front end so I doubt that's the problem. Is your truck lifted? If so, the driveshaft could be at a severe angle causing vibration, but not under a 3 inch suspension lift. The only other thing I could think of would be the transfer case. If it is a full time 4x4 transfer case, then the mileage on it could be high, creating some sort of vibration, be it is right under your butt under your truck. I'm assuming the tranny was fixed and guaranteed, because that would be the first thing I would look at.

Message: hey its got part time 4 wheel drive on it, no the truck is stock, except exhaust, i made an odservation the other day it does it more after i have to break hard. I found this out when the car in front of me slammed on the brakes i did to, then right after that the problem was really bad. Then the this morning i had to do the same thing, and it happened to be the worse it had been ever. I don't know if that would help in the problem.

Message: How about the front wheel bearings? Sometimes, if they need to be cleaned, repacked, the front wheels can make noises/vibrations and that could be felt under you. They need to be checked every 30000 miles or so. If they have not been checked, and your truck has more miles than that, get them checked anyways. It is very dangerous to drive with bad wheel bearings. Even if this isn't the problem, if you haven't done it, get it checked out. (Easy hint, raise the front wheels off of the ground and with the truck in Park, try and shake the front wheel right and left seperately and see if there is any give in the steering.)

Message: Ponder, I feel for you man, If you had someone look at it and they said AOK, I don't know. If It's not your transmission, and not your transfer case (being in 2wd) then it has to be your drive shaft to the rear axle, or the rear axle itself. Seems kind of weird since your truck is mostly stock. Since you've got the towing(heavy duty) rear end I would suspect the U-joint. Try contacting Randy's Ring&Pinion in Everett, Washington. They know everything.
