Message: My freind has a 1998 Dakota sport. I borrowed it last year to move some furniture across country. Doing 110-1`15kph (70-75mph) it got 25mpg.
We just rebuilt a 1991 Dakota Club Cab 4x4 and at 800km since rebuild, on our first 'test' run, we went 175km, and averaged jut under 25mpg. This truck has the 318cid (4.7l) V-8. This number should still improve after 20,000kms or so when everything is fully broken in. We built this truck specifically to improve fuel economy, but the cam we used is rated at around 280hp, with torque peak in the 2800-3000rpm rang.

Message: Possibly people who install shorter tires and/or lower gears and think their gas mileage has improved are only turning their odometer faster and going the same distance or less.

Message: Tire size will affect the math, a gear change will not. The odometer in our Daks is driven by a tone ring in the rear and is unaffected by gear change; unlike other vehicles where you are used to seeing it driven off the transmission. Good point though.

Message: The biggest ailment to truck fuel mileage is wind resistance caused by the tailgate. Put a tonneau cover on (the inexpensive, soft kind will do) to achieve the best mileage for your buck. I have a 02 4.7L 2WD with Gibson headers, AEM intake, Flowmaster exhaust, Viper performance module, and Tuff Tonneau cover that gets between 21 and 24 mpg on the freeway and 17 around town.

Message: I have got a 2003 4x4 QC, stock so far with auto tranny. I have a cab high topper and I carry about 400 lbs of tools all the time. What is the best thing I can do to this year truck to get better mileage. I get about 13 to 13.5 average. In town and out of town. I drive about 75 interstate.
Do you think an electric fan instead of the viscous would be the biggest and then what from there?
Thanks for any help

Message: I just returned froma 500 mile trip to Indiana with my Ducati in the back of my 01 2wd 4.7 Club cab with 3.55 antispin, 5 speed manual. I have logged every penny in expenses, including every fuel stop for 54,000 miles. I get 18.75 with a load, uncovered @ 80mph cruising, actual average about 70mph.
With the tonneau in place, unloaded, about 2.5 mpg better. The only options are a Borla catback, and R/T suspension with Bilstein shocks. City mileage is around 16.75-17. This truck replaced my 1990 V6 Club cab, with 175,000 trouble free miles (except for peeling paint, warranteed by Dodge at 90,00 miles for $100.00 deductible.)

Message: In my opinion spending money to get better mileage out of a truck, especially a 4x4 is an exercise in futility. You can spend hundreds of dollars and maybe pick up a mile or two to the gallon at the most. I always ask myself when I see gas saving mods (aside from tune-ups)…how long will this take to pay for itself? Most aren’t worth it and will only empty your wallet.
I have an ’02 4x4 QC 4.7 auto and it doesn’t seem to matter how I drive it much either…A/C on or off, drive it real easy on take off or normal, it still gets close to the same MPG irregardless. It does ok on the highway though. But like any 4x4 truck or SUV it will never be a gas miser or even come close to getting great gas mileage. It’s just the nature of the beast…

Message: I should add too though that I found as far as highway driving is concerned I do get better mileage when I lower my speed and set the cruise to 55 MPH. I'm the slowest vehicle on the highway, but it really does seem to help.

Message: Hey, after looking through all your posts i thought id have to add my two cents. currently have a quad cab 2004 dakota with the sport package, has lots of crome and the trick filler cover and 31"tires. its a caalifornia truck so it has 4 cats, nice restrictive flow. when i bought it it got 17mpg city gas went up to $3.00 a gallon so i added a throttle body spacer which said it increased power (i does i can feel it) and increase gas mileage 3 mpg. it got 3mpg worse. the 4 cats dodge puts on are by far the worse at decreasing gas mileage. luckily im an alaskan native and only stationed here in cali and will be removing ALL unnessesary exhaust parts shortly. so far the best increase in mileage ive gotten is reducing my lead foot,

Message: The best way to increase your gas mileage in a dakota is to start using the Imperial Gallon for your calculations instead of the US gallon (4.54 Liters compared to 3.78)...
That will give you about a 4mpg gain!!!

Message: Hey Ed,
What's up?
Are you replacing this just for a mpg increase? Save your money then.
Is the cat clogged? Is is under warranty still? ( 80,000) at least. A cat back will RARELY increase any mpg's.
Drive it like its paid for!
