Subject: Considering 4.7 HO cams & intake IP: Logged
Message: Here's what I have now: 2000 club cab 4X4 4.7 5 speed 3.92 LSD. 3" Flowmaster cat-back, homebrew cold air incuction, 68mm stock 2001 throttle body Autolite 3923's.
How much of a gain can I expect if I get the HO upgrade? I've searched, and the results I found didn't really convince me that it was worth the work, risk, and expense. Is there going to be a VERY noticable difference throughout the entire RPM range? Will it feel like a different engine?, or is it just going to have a little more grunt down low? Will the engine sound any different? Will my gas mileage be any worse than it is now? Right now I get between 15-17 on the highway, and if doing this swap takes me down any further, I probably won't do it. Will I need to do anything to the PCM, or can I just leave it alone?
Please share your real world experiences with this swap. If anyone has a similar setup to mine, and did the swap, let me know your impressions after you did the swap.
Thanks
-James

Message: Expect up to 15h.p. (most are around 13h.p.) at the rear wheels. This is awesome for the money if you consider that the K&N fipk for the 4.7L only produces 7h.p. and costs about the same. Go to krcperformance.com for some in depth on the h.o. cams. You won't have to do anything except reset your computer when you put in the cams. Some people have actually reported an increase in mpg.

Message: Another question to add to my extensive list...
Could this mod potentially give my engine a shorter life span? I read something about the springs not being able to handle the lift of the new cams. Any truth to this?

Message: I can tell you that I have about 20K miles on my HO cams and intake. Personally for a 4wd especially I would go cams and not intake. I was one of the first to do both seperately and the cams are where it is at in my opinion.

Message: Premier-Automotive is testing the EHO cams from what I heard. Supposedly a step up from the HO, and works with stock heads.
(HO heads on stock non-HO pistons can actually lower your compression ratio-- again, from what I heard)

Message: We are now Elite Customs Inc. But, yes.. we have one set of the EHO cams installed and running in Indiana. We should have dyno results soon. We also have a set going to Louisana and a set to NY.. Ill post results as soon as we I get them back. The cam is a street / strip cam, our design and grind and doesnt use lash caps.

Message: Thanks Frankie and Jonas, but something new and untested sounds a little to dangerous for my daily means of transporation. I'm not bashing your design, but I think If I do this I'll be sticking with the Mopar stuff.
Anymore answers to my original question(s)?

Message: Spames,
from your search, I'm sure you found that, the HO cams make a hugh difference, esp, w/ torque at tthe lower rpms. And the HO intake, keeps you in the power/tq range at t he upper rpm extremes.
NO-one has had a prob yet with the stock springs
from my research, there IS a slight difference in the springs.
Frankie, the pistons are apparently different, which may account for what you said about just the heads.
I'm partial to high reving engines, and I'm about to also install the HO intake, to my 4.7 with the HO cams in it already. I have a 5spd manual also.
I think I'll like the pull up high, on the rare occasions I take it that high in the rpms.

Message: Texas Todd,
You will definitely not regret getting the HO Intake. Do you have a larger TB as well?

Message: Yesterday I had my local horsepower store contact cam companies about aftermarket cams. They called back saying Crane is developing some for the 4.7. Course I didnt talk to Crane personally yet... Prob will call a few companies myself soon. If they tell me the same, Ill wait for the aftermarket.

Message: Crane would be nice. Maybe I should wait and see if they come out with something too.
And I think I will wait on the intake. I can always try to add it later.
