Subject: Correct octane 2002 4.7
IP: Logged

Message:
I just took delivery of my 02 QC it has a 4.7, mutispeed auto, 3.55 LS. But the vehicles manual is not in the glove box. My question is what octane fuel is recommended in the manual for the 4.7 ?
Thanks George

They tell you to run regular 87 but I've been running OK with mid-grade 89.

93...its only a couple more dollars every time
you fill up...also change your oil to synthetic as
soon as possible (mobli 1 filter and oil) Your
truck will run way smoother.

BTW : the brand of gas makes a difference
too....dont use ARCO!

Mine runs great on 87 -even towing with AC on, no kocking at all and couldn't run smoother. Don't run lower unless you're at very high altitude (Colorado), thats why he runs 85. I could get 86 at Sunoco but less than 87 near sea level could be asking for trouble. Higher octane is harder to ignite and can cost you performance if you don't need it.

Mine knocks on 87 if I floor it. I have been using 93 and don't notice it. I have heard it once, so I wonder if something is wrong. The manual says 87.

Maybe there is something wrong. I've been wondering why I hear so many say their rig knocks and mine doesn't. There can be a little variation in how the cams are set up from the factory, maybe mine were set a little retarded ? Mine gets floored too, it's not that. What does the dealer computer flash for the 4.7 actually do, anyone know ? Mine didn't knock before or after this flash, I think dealer was just trying to do something because he couldn't figure out my intermittent electric problems.

There is no set factory flash for all Dakotas. Depends on wear they they get sold I guess. The timing is so retarded on these to pass emmisions its a wonder they run at all. Listen if you have a 2000 4.7 Dak. - HAVE YOUR PCM FLASHED BY MIKE LEACH!!!!! The difference is incredible!!! I would have paid more than the $400 it cost. Your mileage will increase and it will run soooo much better.

I've been using 87 Octane, I've never seen places selling less than that nor more than 92 (89 is available). Where do you people live that has 85 octane and 93+?

93 is also available in Mass. Lower octanes are typically sold in higher altitude areas. Higher compression motors need more octane, high altitude air is thinner so you effectively aren't getting as much pressure from compression and can run lower octane. Aluminum heads also help us run lower octane for our compression ratio as they conduct heat away from the combustion chamber :)

I always run Chevron 93+ octane and it runs great, run the hotter octane becuase your PCM will detect knock and retard timing in response.

Your PCM doesn't detect knock if there is none ! Most 4.7's shouldn't knock on 87.
