Subject: Whats up w/ my truck?
IP: Logged

Message:
Lately I have been having trouble with my 99 R/T.
When I try to start it all I hear is a rapid ticking. If I keep at it then it will finally start but won't stay started. I have to keep my foot on the gas when I come to a stop other wise it just dies. If anyone has any ideas please let me know. I tried to checking for engine codes but nothing is coming up. PLEASE HELP...

I really am not sure but I figure maybe this'll give ya something to look for if you haven't but... Maybe it's some type of electrical short, granted that depends on the tick but if any of your wires have worn through some place they could be grounding to something and that causes it to die. Or any other form of electrical equipment. I dunno, just a guess.

My guess is the fuel pump (ticking/foot on gas).

ANY IDEA WHAT AREA YOU ARE HEARING THE TICK FROM?ALSO, A STALLING ENGINE WITH THE FOOT OFF THE GAS CAN BE A DIRTY THROTTLE BODY, ENGINE NEEDS AIR AS WELL AS GAS RIGHT.

The ticking seems to be coming from the starter, when I last got in the truck the dome light was very dim but the battery test ok. I will look at the throttle body to see if it is clean or dirty. Could it have to do with the computer at all?

SOUNDS TO ME THAT YOUR LOSING CONNECTION ON EITHER YOUR POSSITIVE OR NEGATIVE CABLES.ON NEWER VEHICLES WITH OBDII, WHEN YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY THE CAR HAS TO BE DRIVEN AT CERTAIN SPEEDS AND LENGTHS OF TIME TO SET FUEL AND ADDAPTIVE STRATEGIES. THIS COMTROLLS IDLE SPEEDS AMONG OTHER THINGS.ALSO EXPLAINS THE SO CALLED TICKING OF THE STARTER.NOT ENOUGH CURRENT TO TO THE STARTER.

bet he didn't. try going to autozone, they will put a scan tool on it for free and sell you the parts you need to fix it cheaper then the dealer.
