Subject: 4x4 Steering Knuckle Woes
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi all,

I just Bought a 1995 Dakota 4x4 with a 318 and am going through her to find any hidden surprises. The first is a caliper pin which is stripped out in the steering knuckle (passengers side). I replaced the pin, but it appears that it is the steering knuckle which is stripped. I am currently looking for a replacement steering knuckle...over $400 new, but I don't think I want to helicoil it. Any used ones out there? Is this a common problem on the Dakota's? Or did the PO just use wayyyyyy to much torque? Also, anyone know a good source for slotted or cross drilled rotors for this beast?

Thanks,

JD

Same prob on my 92 Dak, I decided to plug weld the hole and then
I re-drilled and re-tap. I work in machine shop so its was quite
easy. If you go helicoil, make sure your drill that knuckle out
straight and carefully....

The best part of it all is that i cant find a steering knuckle for a 99 dodge dakota at any juck yard because everybody is having the same problem as me and when i do find one it is stripped out. or the rails are pitted. I called the dealer and they said it would cost $810.00 for a new one. I can helicoil the the threads but what about the rails that the caliper sets on. Im tired of dodges bullcrap.should i spend the 810 dollars that i dont have and then pray that my ol' faithful dodge transmission dosent fall apart or what?

Same problem here with my 99 Dak Sport 4x4... it seems to
me like they made the knuckles with some substandard
metal. Sounds like I'll have to pull the knuckles on both sides
and pay a visit to my local machinist. (I'm also wondering if
there isn't a way to cut off the existing caliper rails and weld
in new hardened steel ones? Gonna get the machine shop
guys opinion on that.)

The machine shop is my best friend.......

Sandblast throughly around the caliper bolt pin holes on the
knuckles as some welding and machining will be required.

Drill out the caliper bolt pins on the knuckle to a finished
reamed size of 5/8", with a 1/8" chamfer on both sides of the
holes, the chamfer on the knuckle is for welding in a new plug.
For the plug, I used 5/8" 416 stainless round bar, with a 1/8
hole right through the plug, as this will be the true center.
I would then press fit the 5/8" plug into the knuckle. The plug is
TIG welded at the chamfers on both sides of the knuckle using
3333 welding rod.
I also decided to make new caliper bolt pins instead of using the
stock ones. In my opinion, the length of thread on the stock
caliper bolt pin is lacking, so the new thread length will be 1/2"
longer instead of the stock 1/4".
I used 1/2" 416 stainless round bar for the caliper bolts pins.
Its a lot of work, and costs a few dollars.
But its a DODGE and its well worth it!!!

After pulling the passenger side tire I though I
forgot to tighten the bottom caliper bolt pin. Nope,
just striped itself out, warped the rotor, destroyed
a new set of pads, and melted the threads on both
bolt pins. Now to try and find a usable knuckle or a
good machine shop.

dodge rust junk, been a ford guy forever, like the size of the Dakota crew cab, but ford run and work so much better. replaced calipers and have abutment clips scraping hub, sliders worn, both heads were cracked guess it was over heated, now have a million dollar truck worth 10 cents
back to ford
