Message: I have a 1995 318 4x4 Dakota.I think the oil pump is going bad.The dealer wants a outrageous price to change a oil pump. They say its mostly labor. Is it that hard of a job? Can it be done in the driveway with no special tools? Thanks for any help

Message: Why do you think the pump is going bad? Generally, an oil pump either works or it don't work at all. It's basically a gearset rotating in a body.

Message: its not that hard of a job.about 4hrs.
check the shaft that drives the dist and oil pump
it may have broke, where it goes into the oil pump.
you,ll need to pull the dist[keep in mind how the dist and rotor button are pointed so you can getyour timing back, plus once the dist is out DON,T turn the motor] now that the dist is out take a straight tip screw drive and back the shaft out[look at the slot in the shaft and make sure you put the slot back at the same degree it was when you removed it,this is inportant too]
now you can look at the shaft on the end that goes
in the pump.there should be about 1inch that is eight sided, plus its a little rounded on the edges.if not its its broke.take a strong magnet and try to get the broken piece out of pump,if not you,ll have to pull the pump.
hope this helps.
