Subject: pinging IP: Logged
Message: i have a 93 dakota with a 5.2, and it makes a pinging noise when it is under a load . it sounds like it is out of time but a mechanic said the timing couldnt be adjusted and that it was probably the knock sensor , can anybody tell me if he is right and if he is , where is the knock sensor.......thanks

Message: do you burn oil... chances are it has nothing to do with the timing.. it's a blown plentum gasket... this is the gasket that goes on the bottom of the intake, where the bottom plate bolts on... it will suck in oil etc. from the crank case... cheap fix and a couple hours work..

Message: Just added my 180 degree stat and haven't heard any pinging lately. I think that did the trick.

Message: find abetter mechanic. the distributer timing could be of that is the rotor inside may not be lined up right with the post for each wire when it fires, will cause pinging and the timing most certainlt can be of due to bad crank or cam positionsensors or a bad or badly programmed PCM.
