Subject: How do I check my timing?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2K quad cab with the 5.9L engine and want to check the timing. However, there is no way to see the pulley marks or the advance/retard numbers on the block. Is it even possible to check it? I imagine it is since some have actually slotted the crank timing sensor bracket to adjust their timing. And, this is why I want to check the timing so I know how far I've gone.
Thanks,

Kris

You can not check the timing by conventional means, you need to hook it up to the computer at Dodge. Also you can not adjust the timing by conventional means, need that computer again. But Dodge can only retard it, you need a mopar pcm or special flash to advance things. Unless you want to mess with the crankshaft sensor in the tranny.

Well, that was my whole involvement from the beginning was to mess with the crank sensor. I would like to know how much I've advanced or retarded my timing, and how many degress to stop. At least you answered my first question in relation to being able to check my timing. Thanks.

I tried for a day to advance my timing, finally i realized that no matter what the pully says the computer resets it everytime. It is not possible to adjust the timing it is completly computer controlled. Thats what mopar magnum hotline says.

timing is non adjustable, you can fool the compter into advancing the timing a little by playing with the crank sensor, but you have to have a DRB III scan tool to check timing, which means a dealer. the dist effects injector timing, DO NOT ADJUST THE DIST, you will throw a check engine light, and then you will have to go to a dealership for them to adjust it back.

I think I can help you guys out.On our trucks we can not adjust the timing. The distibutor is really a cam position sensor and with the DRB3 at your chrysler dealer what they do is adjust the sinc. What this is,is when the injector pops in to relation to the degrees of the crankshaft. The distributor reads what timing the cam is at so the fuel will be introduced at the right time.If you think you need more timing a MP pcm or a good aftermarket flash would be the ticket.

Dude, before I repeat the same thing that everyone else has already said 14 times now, let me tell you to call Marty Fletcher at KRC Performance.

www.krcperformance.com

He is the one that posted that crank-sensor mod in the first place, and he'll be able to tell you how best to check your timing, or at least where to "stop" with the sensor in the slot.

Now....... as everyone else is saying... you can't adjust blah blah blah DRBIII blah blah...

And, it's this that I intend to do. The crank sensor mod. I did a search on this issue and found that folks are noticing better power delivery and improved mpg. I'm surprised more people have not done this in the past.
My original question was HOW to check the timing first.
