Subject: ABS and Brake Light

I've got a '99 R/T and about a month ago, my brake light (like the emergency brake is on) and ABS light both came on at the same time. The lights do not come on when I first start the truck, but when I hit about 40+ mph, they light up. I replaced the speed sensor in the rear end (the cheapest of all the evils) and it didn't improve anything. I've got about 50,000 miles on it, and the brakes are brand new and i've got plenty of fluid. I'm hoping to avoid buying a new control box and i don't want to dump any money by handing it to the dealer (can they actually tell me if it's the control box or are they going to just guess like me without the reader?). I've also got a check engine light that everytime I reset it, it stays off for a couple weeks and then comes back (that could be just the O2 sensor or my remote start voltage, but it could be related, i have no idea). Any hints would help a lot. THANKS

could be the fluid level sensor in the reservoir... if it get's low it will set off the brake light... when I did my rear disc conversion and was first bleading the brakes both brake and ABS light came on... after everything was done it was back to normal... also might check for vacume leaks in the brake booster... hope you can avoid the dealer...

When you changed the speed sensor at the rearend was there any debris on the old sensor. If so check the new one now.If there is what looks like grimmey dirt on it wipe it off and drain the rearend.Make sure to wipe the inside good and refill with a synthetic and trak-loc additive. What I am getting at is I have seen that with mileage that the clutches in the diff wear and the debris gets in the fluid. Then that crap will stick to the sensor and will cause problems.Try this and repost if that fixed it or not and will go from there

ok.. I did a post about this and I had the exact same problem as you have where the ABS light comes on and off last month. Do a search on the topic under my name and you'll see it.

Dodge dealer replaced the PKG-Stop LAMP which costs about $11.95. They charged me $120 to figure out the problem and do it though. If you know where this is you could save some money.

The error in my computer said error 41 which means "replace brake switch". I'm reading this all right off my invoice from dodge. The part number for my truck was 5016294AD SW PKG-STOP LAMP.

Hope that helps... and it fixed my truck.

Bill

Similar prob, also posted request for info and results back in Oct. 02 on this. This was happening on a Dak, '98 SLT-CC 5.2 Auto, I was about to purchase, the problem was fixed by the owner/dealer and has not happened since.

Intermittently, (sometimes), the ABS/Brake lite would come on.., The light came on while I was test driving it,

The owner said he had recently had it fixed that the dealer had replaced the Speed sensor on the diff, $250.00. After some conversation he agreed there might still be a problem.. I did not make an offer.

I called him back a week later to make an offer, he said he went back to the dealer and had the ABS/Brake problem fixed.. for another $210.00

Bill says:
108 Test and Replace Brake Lamp Switch
383 Pulis, Paul Lic#: ? $150.00
(1) 4671334 Switch-Stop Lamp $ 41.50
Total $210.83 after tax..

The problem appears fixed, he accepted my offer, we have had the Dak since October 02, and the lite has not come on since.

Hey, I had the same prob as well but mine started after I came off the beach and was washing the brake and everything else between the front wheel and wheel well. the truck was still idleing away and both the abs and the E brake was stuck on. I had to pull the wheel off and flush it out ( I think maybe a rock or something ) and it went out the next day right after I did that. but that's just my case.

I have a 1994 dakota, i was having the same problem, So i took it up to a local auto dealer, he told me to take the Neg. wire off the battery and let it sit for a Min. to let the computer reset. He told me that one omy wheels was turning when i hit the brake, caused by doughnuts on an icy road or power braking on ice, thats exactly what i was doing......maybe so in your case.

The brake pedal sensor was exactly the problem. It cost about 19 bucks, and it was located up above the brake pedal (in case anyone asks or cares) and took about two minutes to install. I am so happy i didn't have to spend any money on that damn control box (especially since it wouldn't have fixed anything. I really appreciate your input 99Dak5.2L4x4. Thanks again
