Subject: Bad mileage.... bad performance problem

During the winter season, my 2002 4.7 4x2 ext cab with 3.55 rear end has been getting on average 10-11mpg with mixed driving. Its horrid, and the performance seems a little sluggy by comparision to when i first bought it. The dealer replaced a Ignition Coil when i first took it in, but now claims nothing else is wrong. When i first got the truck i got a whopping 22mpg on the freeway and 18.5 on streets. Exhaust and K&N filter later, nothing improved its performance. Now the weather warms up and the mileage improves a little. I'm currently in a war with the dealership over it... any ideas or suggestions? There is definately a problem but there seems to be nothing wrong with it. The cat is fine, and the filters are clean. 20k miles and a tune up in another 5k will yield some results hopefully.

What kind and size exhust? Maybe you went too big and are using more gas to get the low end power you lost? Also, you could possible have a bad 02 sensor causing bad mileage. Did you ever get bad gas in it? If so, or just for the fun of it try some injector cleaner. You will get worse mileage in the winter, and now the gas prices have gone up with spring. I can't tell if you have a problem, but if you want more performance try the H.O. cams and intake, I have also heard of a good improvement in gas mileage with them. Hope this helps any, Later,

Andrew

I've gone with the Gibson Split Rear Cat Back exhaust. I installed it myself along with the K&N filter during the summer, almost 2 weeks after I bought the truck. I noticed some power improvements, but no losses. Mileage actually improved with it (10-15 miles per tank). This problem was very sudden, almost taking place during a 2 week span. I thought that my filter oil might have been mixed with water and froze during the winter. But its been warm lately and the problem has remained. The O2 Sensor is fine, or so the dealer tells me. I've used injector cleaners and fuel system cleaners on a regular basis since the problem has arisen, no such luck. This is a real stumper... i appreciate the advice though.

I just did the same mods to my 2003 4X4 truck this weekend (K&N and Gibson) noticed 3.5 MPG increase -- 16.5 vice 13 mpg or so. Have noticed that the 4.7 gets better mileage with better grades of gas...however, it is still a gas hog in my opinion_

4.7 a gas hog?
Mine isn't.
Just as mr. sleepy said, it wasn't before.

4x4 = less mpg, I'm assuming you're also dividing the mileage by the gallons each fillup, right, otherwise, it's just not very accurate.

Good luck, let us know if you find the culprit.

Also remember that it is a truck... Not many trucks that are still able to haul a load or tow a load even get 13MPG... I get 16.5 average in my current truck and I think that is great. I used to get 13-14 with my old v6 that I drove like grandma...

You're complaining to the dealer about worse mileage in the winter? And you're not being laughed out of the placE?
