Well that sight lists the 4x4 R/T as a choice, but I still have trouble believing in it. The factory sometimes has plans to produce something and end up releasing some technical service bullitians on it and then pull the plug befor it ever is produced. That same sight seems to apply all TSB's and recalls to a Dakota regardless of what was possible to have (My 2000 R/T gets TBS's listed there regarding transfer case, clutch, etc that weren't ever an option.) The site also lists some other old "legends" like a 72 Charger 440 six pac. I've seen many old Motor repair manuals that had all the specs on a 71 Challenger TA or 71 Cuda AAR. The factory fully planned on making all those cars as well but one thing or another came along and changed the plan.

Living in Montana with a R/T as my daily driver, I wouldn't say a 4x4 is necessary. I even use my R/T hunting, fishing, camping, towing, etc. I bet the mileage accumulated on the average 4x4 Dakota in Washington is 98% in 2wd. Doesn't mean someday you may really need it.

The MDS2 only lists them in 2wd. What you are talking about may be a dealer thing that some dealers participated in. That is all I can think of. Kind of like the 440 Dart GSS the dealers installed the engines in these cars after they left the factory. They sold them as new beacuse they were but they were not like that from the factory.

Not to start a flame here but all I see is a couple of people saying that they have one. Still sounds like a dealer build thing to me. I need pics, window stickers, build sheets anything. I would really like to see one. I also hear of people claiming that they built a R/T with a 5 speed. I know they didn't build one in '99 because I tried to order one.

After reading some threads around that board I'm even more convinced they weren't factory trucks. The one guy even claims it to be a 5-speed 4x4 R/T. I think they are just clones. I'd want to see window stickers, and pictures of the tire pressure decal in the door jam, and one of the emission label under the hood. These things would easilly be the rarest Dodge R/T ever, more then any Hemi car of old. There would be information all over the Dakota R/T registry and wesite. If somebody truly believes the have a factory built 5-speed 4x4 Dakota R/T then they've been duped.

After reading it even more the only person I can see that claims to have a 4x4 R/T, says its a 99 model year not a 98. And he says he ordered it in 2001! It would ssem he went into the dealer laying down money fro something that never existed. The dealer took his money and made a 99 5-speed 318 sport into a R/T. I bet by the time this story was straightened out it really still was a 318 in that truck, but maybe they at least did him the good to swap a 360 in there. One of the keys here is that they didn't produce a 2001, the year he 'ordered' it, in that year it would have been a 4.7 mated to a 5-speed and very obvious to the casual observer it wasn't a 360. Somepeople may not even be trying to deceive, they may honestly believe that just slapping a set of R/T stickers on anything makes it an R/T, what's the big deal right? Put a Hemi in a Cuda and technically you got a Hemi Cuda, but if it came the factory that way then it's a much bigger deal.

Read this guy's first post ever on those web boards

http://www.moparchat.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7164

I get the impression that he just got his truck at this point. He also says it has the 3.55 gears another incorrect R/T thing (actually this year I think you can order the R/T with 3.55 for the first time). Searching under this guy's name shows he hasn't said a word about any Dakota in over a year, he also has his own webpage that makes no mention of owning any Dakota, especially one as rare as a 1 or 2 off 4x4 R/T.

You posted another link to some car show pictures

http://www.home.earthlink.net/~coertell/socalclassic.htm

and clearly this is how a fake is so quickly found by poeple who know R/T's, The white truck has a black sport bumper.
The only other person over there claiming to have a 4x4 R/T was 'CJ Jeff' he too just said he "ordered" one but I saw no claims of actually having one in possession, He too has a webpage that makes no mention of it and hasn't posted anything on the boards for a year.
All of these trucks are aftermarket creations. It's just like the Holley MTS Dakota's and Rams, I bet there are a lot of their owners who talk about their "factory" truck and how hard it was to "order". Hell they even have the factory warrenty. Lots of Gen II Dakota owners made there own R/T's before it was ever announced there would be a factory one, so in a way they really had the first R/T's. It's always been fun to make a custom look like it came from the factory that way. I rember seeing this awesome 71 Duster with the big engine callout diagonally on the hood. Instead of '340' it said '440'. The 440 under the hood looked as stock as could be and like it had always been there. This guy was always laughing it up at car shows with all the people who "used to own one just like it". He built the thing himself, there was never a factory 440 duster in 71, but this one completely looked factory, you would never know. I'm not trying to flame here just get the facts straight. These 4x4 R/T sightings are rarer then UFO sightings and have less documentation to go with them. It just doesn't pan out. If you can get Galen Govier to say it was factory then I beleive, no other proff necessary, but otherwise at this point, IMO, it never happened.

OK guys....
....seems like we're creating a legend here. All my sources (Mopar moles) say 'no, never was one or will be one...it's a production tooling/marketing thing.' Anyway, I'm working on a 5.9/man swap (408 stroker) for my truck. I'll let u know how it works out....... Cap
