Hey guys i have a 98 dakota 4x4 5.2L ext. cab truck. I'm having a big problem. I recently purchased the truck about a month ago, here whats goin on. I went out 4 wheelin th oter day (minor four wheelin) just to play around and see what the truck could do stock. Well it turns out the truck has some type of locking rear diff. Well once they engaged off road, they won't disengage. i think this is problem anyways. If you turn the steering wheel about one and a half turns everything is ok but further than that will slow the truck to stop, i'm not sure if the truck is stuck in 4 wheel or if this lockng rear end is giving me grief. Can you PLEASE tell me some things to check to see whats wrong or give me some ideas. is there a way to check and make sure the transfer case is in 2 wheel? Hope you guys can help, thanks Nick

i,m not sure on the 98,s but 87-94 have a vacuum shift on the front diff. on pass.side that engages and disengages the front diff. if you had a vacuum pump with a gauge you can test the diaphram to see if there good and hold vacuum.

hope this helps.

Like BNTm say check in loos geaves dirt somethin. Some times in My `93 5.2 4x4 when I drop out of 4 the front still want's to stay in. A few tricks. Loose gravel reverse and make the rear spin. OR in grave while moving forward if you have rear abs lock the front up the front breaks. trick work for me.
