I want to put headers on my 02 4.7, but also want to get rid of the small y pipe. Anybody have any suggestions as to what set up would work well? I have Gibson swept side on it now, but am looking to complete the whole exhaust.
What about the computer setup?

Just go to a GOOD exhaust shop. Most will probably be able to build you something. Find the best shop you know of and don't skimp on it. You'll probably need some O2 simms as well cause i'm pretty positive your pre-cats are in your y-pipe.

When you purchase the whole header kit, doesn't it come with a new Y-pipe? Also, is any aftermarket Y-pipe that you get bigger than the stock Y-pipe that comes on the 4.7L Dakota?

There are no after market y-pipes for the 4.7L. I've checked around alot. If you've found by all means share the info. If it is made by a normal company (i.e. hedman or thorley) then yes is would probably have the O2 sensors and pre-cats.
But seeing as any y-pipe I have found must be custom made you would probably have to get the o2 sims and get rid of the pre-cats. I have a '00 model so I have no pre-cats.
I have no idea on what it might cost to get something like that built. Those with pre-cats will probably have to wait because of the whole law about getting rid of your cat-converter(s).
I've already replaced my original cat with a carsound free-flow. Made a huge difference. I suggest doing that first. For you '01-'03 guys its your 3rd cat back. You may even want to just remove it for it has no o2 sensor on it.

What some people have done is:
Cut out the third cat (the last one in line) and replace it with a straight pipe. Then before going to emissions they take out the straight pipe and clamp the cat back in place. So the answer is no your truck will probably not pass emmission. At least not the visual test. Carsound cats are CARB legal from what I understand. They run anywhere from $90-$125. I've heard you can get them off ebay for even cheaper from a reputable ebay store.

I think it would but i'm no emissions tester and we don't have emissions tests here in FL. so you may want to check with the carsound web page. I saw the carsound 2.5" in/out on ebay brand new in the box for $78. Thats a pretty good deal.
Carsound cats are CARB legal from what I understand.

In some posts, I've read where you'll lose low-end torque if you increase the size of the y-pipe. I plan on getting Gibson headers and just wondering if I should keep the stock y-pipe. The low end is more important to me. Already have the top end. Thanks anyone.

I have an 02 4.7 with no pre-cats. Only the one by the tranny with 02 sensors before and after. I assume you replaced yours with the Carsound Cat. Did it come with the bungs (thread-o-lets) already welded in. Where there any problems. Did you just cut and clamp and then get it welded.
It has started coming to light that the "3rd cat" on a 3 cat system is not a cat at all. Just a resonator. This is all rumor at this time.

I had the cat installed. A friend put it in for me. I work to much and don't have the tools or time to deal with it. I'm pretty sure it came with the bungs in place. That was over a year ago. I'm pretty sure he just cut out the old one and welded up the new one. He said nothing of any kind of problems. The carsound will increase your exhaust note a little. I suggest you accampany it with a muffler to smooth out the sound. The cat gave it kind of a roar (basically stock sound but louder). I've got a magnaflow #14256 behind mine (i'm not into loud just wanted it to sound like a V8). You may need a different cat than me handi...i'm not sure. I got mine from speedtweaks for $90.

im pretty sure it is a cat and not a resonator cause when i took mine off i could smell more fumes at the initial startup. also, i recently got a whole new y-pipe with no cats on it for my '02 R/T plus i eliminted the third cat. however, now when im on the gas i hear this ticking sound and was wondering if it could be an exhaust leak? has anyone else deleted all 3 cats and how was the sound quality? mine sounds good at idle and low revs but thats about it.

The third cat is a cat. The factory manual says so. Also, I have looked right down into mine. It's not huge, but it's sure as hell heavy.
