Subject: Rear End Oil! Please help IP: Logged
Message: Id like to change my rear end oil. I know you have to pop off the rear end cover, then drain all the oil. Once you put it back on, where do you fill the rear end with fresh oil. What type of oil should i use? and how much?

Message: if you look on the diff. cover there is a little rubber plug that you pull out. that is where you put your diff. fluid back in. does your truck have a Sure-Grip? if so use a good synthetic fluid and add a can of Mopar Friction Modifier from your local Dodge dealer parts. its about 7.00 a bottle. your diff. should hold right at 2.5 quarts of fluid.

Message: How about a little comic relief? I took my '98 to the dealer (54000 mi.) for a minor warranty item (O2 sensor). Just for the hell of it, I asked how much it would cost to change the oil in the rear and 5 speed, as the truck was already in the shop. The service writer told me it would cost $90 just for the rear. I started laughing so hard that I never did get the price to do the trans.

Message: Wow! You got a much better price than what a local Dodge dealer quoted me. I got a $162 price for the diff service and a rear brake adjustment. I said "no thanks" and promptly departed.
I took my truck to my usual tire/oil/brake/etc service man and he did the diff service for $35. His son quoted $55 and I was happy with that price. I bought the StaLube L/S friction modifier for $6.42 (tax included) and had him put it in, as he only stocks GL-5 lube. The job took 45ish minutes.
Total cost: $41.42, and less than 1 hour.
Can't beat that. It's not even worth getting my hands dirty with the d-i-y method to save some $$$.
The dealer price for this service is more than a little out of line. How much does the oil and additive *really* cost? How much time (at $$$/hour) is the job specifed?

Message: Unbolt the cover, carefully pry off and drain out all the lube. Use a quality oil, manual says 75W-140. Most synthetics do not require the limited slip additive, but won't hurt to use it.
RTV the cover back on. Using a suction gun or small funnel, fill back up until level with the fill plug and you are done.
I used synthetic Richmond Gear Oil 75W-140. Red Line and Amsoil also make that weight lube.
