I don't know about repairing one, but I removed one from my project motor today, so I can tell you how that went. I had already removed all the accessories and bracket, so it was pretty easy to get to. I had a friend help me hold a wrench on one of the 4 bolts holding on the pulley, while I loosened the others - after which the pulley slides right off. The seal is really tight on the water pump housing, so we put a block of wood on it and hit it with a hammer several times before it came loose. There is an impellor in the back of it.

Here is what the manual says:
Replace water pump assembly if it has any of the following conditions:
? The body is cracked or damaged
? Water leaks from the shaft seal. This is evident by traces of coolant below vent hole
?Loose or rough turning bearing. Also inspect viscous fan drive
?Impeller rubs either the pump body or timing chain case, cover.
A quick test to determine if the pump is working is to test if heater warms properly. A defective pump will not be able to circulate heated coolant through the long heater hose to the heater core.
