 Subject: '97 5.2L Knocking Noise

I recently started to hear a knocking sound coming from under the hood of my '97 5.2L. It only happens when I de-accelerate down to an idle from highway speeds and lasts no more than a few seconds (a few knocks). The truck has 85000 miles on it. Can anyone tell me what may be causing this noise?

Most likely a loose timing chain. Very common problem. Get a double roller set

i was just asking. im just hoping someone may know some reasons
what could make that happen. i did not hear it when it was at a idle
but only when i accelerated

Much better. Now you say you hear it only when accelerating correct? Can you describe the sound with a little more detail? Does it sound kinda of sound like a rattling noise?

ya only when i accelerate and did not notice or hear it when just
cruising. it was a loud ticking noise not super loud but definitely
noticeable.

Daddio the 97's have the chain tensioner correct?
Only things I can think of pre-ignition.
(possible plen. gasket)
or a Lifter
(first thought on preignition)

Are you using any oil between changes? Fuel mileage down lately? Could be an exhaust manifold leak or the plenum gasket. It's really hard to tell from the internet.

definitely not a metal rattle. on using oil not that i notice but i dont
look that often. fuel mileage has been down i bit not to much like 3
mpg. IM getting ready to change the cap, wires and plugs. ill look
in to gaskets and let you know what or if i find something.

Take a flash light, Hold the throttle open
(engine not running of course) & look down the
throttle body into the intake.
You're looking for a tar/oily residue.
Hard to tell if you're hear (ping) preigniton
without the truck in front of me.
You could also have an o2 on the way out.
These motors are strong unless maintenance was
neglected you shouldn't have any major problems.

Why don't we check for stored codes anyway? Turn the key on/off/on/off/on codes will display in the odometer as PXXXX and when it's finished it will display Pdone. Turn the key to "on" not start. 3MPG is a pretty big drop in mileage unles you were getting about 40 MPG before which I highly dount you'd get from a Dak unless you converted it to a hybrid!

ok guys on the looking it to the throttle body i did not see any
tar/oil in there, and i could not get the codes to pop up but my
friend has a code reader that i can use. so ill see it all then. but
today i was playing with it the sound was coming from the right
side if your looking at the engine. but ill let you all know what the
code reader pulls up if anything.

on the intake. Is that what you did?

well ever one i found the noise. it was from my exhaust manifold
there was two broken bolts in the back under the heat shield. then
i was trying to remove the exhaust manifold and i broke one more
and one is not going anywhere it would not brake or coming out.
now i get to brake the bolt and take out 3 bolts from it. but its ok at
least it was not something to bad. and if anyone know how to get
that bolt out with out braking it let me know please.
thanks for all your help guys. and ya i did look in to the t/b. ill let
you all know if the noise stops after i fix the manifold.
