Subject: What oil filter to use?

Message:
I've been getting my low oil pressure light flickering on at idle when engine is hot ever since my new engine build. I replaced the oil pressure sensor and it still does it.

I've heard lots of mixed opinions about what oil filters TO and NOT TO use. I heard that Fram filters are bad for the Dakotas. What do you think I should use? I've had a "Neon" friend tell me that the Mopar filters are made by Fram and he recommended Purolator.

Let me know what you guys think.

AMSOIL filters screen down to 1 Micron and have an anti-drainback valve. They outperform every other filter on the market. I sell them.

Go with a Wix or a Napa Gold. I run the napa 1515 Gold. It is larger then the factory intsalled unit. (Same as the Ford FL1A). You can not go wrong. Increased capacity by roughly a cup:)

I use the Fram TG filters, TOUGH GUARD, They work very well, silicone anti drain back valve, silicone seal gasket, better filtration than the regular plan Fram. and only 5.oo each.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I'm not sure which one I'll go with yet. I only have about 175-200 miles on this engine. I'll probably change the oil and filter when I reach about 500.

I have a "Defense" filter on there now made by AlliedSignal. Do you think the oil filter is what could be causing my low oil pressure light to flicker on at idle after engine has been heated up?

I gotta agree with the Wix! Wix makes the NAPA filters so just go there and get them, stay far, far, away from Fram!

I think allied signal IS fram.

I use a Motorcraft FL-1A (which is actually the
good Purolator) on my Quad 4.7. It might not
work on a 4x4 though as it's a little longer
than the stock filter.

I read that private oil filter report some time ago, and I decided to use the Mobil 1 filter. If I can't afford the $11 for a filter once every 3 or 4 months, I've got deeper problems than worrying about how much my oil filter costs.

Pool shark,

I just READ your second Post!!!

This is a new engine!! Better do something quick!

check the sensor, oil press., with a shop gauge, etc.

DO YOU WANT TO BLOW UP THIS NEW MOTOR! And you'e worried about the filter! Hope that's what's wrong!

The light has actually gone away now and the engine is actually idling lower than what it was originally. So that's a really good thing, normally the pressure would go lower with the idle going lower.

The engine is running a lot better than it was originally. I've been doing a lot of tweaking and been keeping at getting some other mods done. I keep my eye on the guage and it hasn't been going very low anymore. Now it's at about the same level as it has been ever since I bought the truck. I still want to get that cheap filter off and change the oil anyways though.

Here are some stats on oil filters you might find interesting. Single pass means the oil was passed thru the filter only once. Multipass means the oil was recycled thru the filter until no more particulates were filter out.
Purolator 99%@ 10 microns-single pass
Bosch Prem. 98% 15 microns-single pass
Mobil One 98%@10 micron- single pass
Super Tech(Walmart) 98%@20 microns-single pass
K&N 90%@10 microns-multi-pass
A/C Duraguard 98%@ 25 microns- single pass
Amzoil SDF 98%@10 microns single pass

Sorry, no numbers on the Wix but I can tell you that the Wix does flow more oil because it generally has 30% less filter media than any other filter. A micron is a linear measurement of 1/ millionth of a meter. Hope this helps.

So what exactly does all this mean? Is the percentage suposed to by higher or lower? What about the micron rating, higher or lower?

The higher the percentage the better and the lower the micron the better. Example: the Purolator is 99% efficent at removing 10 micron and larger particles in a single pass. The particle size that is considered large enough to do damage to your engine is in the 20-40 micron size.

The larger filter will not fit a 4x4 dak. There is not enough room between the adaptor and the frame. Just make sure ya use a filter with an anti drain back valve. Most filters, even the really good ones will start bypassing at about 2000 miles.

what boils my blood is one person says that the Fram oil filter sucks, and it's a chain reaction that spreads,a nd everyone says it sucks.

Sorry to break it to you, but around here (in tennessee) the only oil filter that "Hot Rodders" I.E. people driving 67 malibu's, and 57 Chevy's, they are still using the same Fram Filter, that they started using back when that same car came out.

So if you think people pushing 1G in Horses out of old muscle cars, using a Fram oil filter is wrong, then I guess all those years they spent rebuilding that car was for nothing.

Fram makes a good oil filter. enough said.

What oil filter to use? Amsoil ?

For Information Purposes:

For the record ... I would NEVER use FRAM.

Many Dakota owners (and others) are trying to figure out how many different oil filter manufacturers there are, and which manufacturer makes what brands. From what I can gather, here is what is out there:

Honeywell - makes Fram (In Canada the Quaker State filters are Fram filters / In the USA, QS is Purolator), Pennzoil, Quaker State

Arvin Meritor - makes Purolator Premium Plus, PureONE, Ford OEM, V-1 & SureFlow (Superflow?)

Dana - makes Wix and Napa Gold/Silver, AC Delco DuraGuards for Canada

Baldwin (Parent of Hastings) - Baldwin, Hastings, Amsoil, Casite, maybe others

Champion Labs - Mobil 1, K&N, Supertech, AC Delco DuraGuards (two different types) for USA, Bosch Premium, STP, Ultraguard Gold, Deutch & Luberfiner

Cummins Engine - owns Fleetguard

Mann - a top quality German filter maker (for our many German Friends on this site)

The order of the BEST MEDIA in a oil filter:

synthetic -
fiberglass - it is second because fiberglass has to be held together with glues and therefore decreases flows
cellulose - if this get water in it it will bubble up and restrict flow.

Blended filtration media composed of synthetic, cellulose and fiberglass fibers are usually the best.

==================================================
YOU NEED A BALANCE BETWEEN FLOW AND FILTRATION

FILTRATION

It seems that engine wear gets worse when there are particles above 5 micron particles not being filtered out of the system. GM has done studies where the wear became very great at around 30 microns. On the flip-side, Mobil did tests in 1995 where they ran a number of vehicles at 7.5K oil changes and 15K oil changes on filters that would have been in the 25 micron range. The vehicles went 200K with very little wear. So it would seem that filters that grab most of the 15-20 micron particles whould be OK. I know this is not very scientific.

It really depends on the clearances in your engine. An engine such as my neighbors LT1, which is a small block Chevy as far as the bottom end is concerned, has large clearances so a 20 micron particle won't harm it as much as it would on a much tighter engine such as many DOHC 4 cylinder imports. So in other words, it's different in every case.
--------------------------------------------------
In theory, reducing wear particles to 0 is optimum but in the real world of automobile engines it doesn't work.

What good does filtering out for instance .5 (1/2) microns ... 100% of the time ... but causing wear by interupting oil flow to the bearings.
--------------------------------------------------
If you are concerned, perform a Used Oil Analysis and see for yourself what is the PPM range in your engine ... for all the major metals (iron, lead, alumn, copper).
--------------------------------------------------

FLOW

FLOW IS ... AS IMPORTANT, maybe ... MORE IMPORTANT ... than FILTRATION. Many filters have good filtration and terrible flow.

__________________________________________________

What is your budget?

A $5 filter, then Bosch Super Premium or Wix. Reasons: Top notch construction, good filtering, and good flow. (The PureOne is in this price range too, but I've got issues with restricted flow in the PureOne because of the densely packed media.)

And $7 (preferred customer price) for Amsoil SDF oil filters.

Amsoil Super Duty Oil Filters (SDF) offer all-around better filtration and protection than conventional filters. Full flow design for extended drain intervals and severe service. Our filters contain a high-tech blended filtration media composed of cellulose, synthetic and glass fibers. The media sets the Super Duty apart from conventional filters in capacity, efficiency and service life, delivering superior filtration and protection.

The AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter (SDF) is designed to provide maximum filtration while meeting the high flow demands of modern automobiles. The AMSOIL SDF contains a special cellulose, synthetic and glass blend media that offers the best possible balance of long life, high capacity and overall efficiency.

The AMSOIL SDF has a lofted fiber depth-type media that traps dirt throughout its entire thickness for exceptional filtering efficiency. It keeps oil clean and free of wear-causing contaminants.

The AMSOIL SDF has a heavy-duty case of drawn steel. The case is double-crimped at the base with rolled-under seaming to withstand extreme pressure surges and road shocks.

The AMSOIL SDF has an anti-drainback valve that keeps trapped contaminants in the filter when the engine is not running.
