Subject: What else can go wrong IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 Dakota with a 5.2 5 speed, I purchased last year as a corp car from a dealer with 28,000 miles on it, so far I have had the fog light switch failure, Catalitic converter, rear brake problem, water pump and now the rear end sounds like its shot (whining noise). I love to drive my Dak it now has 54,000 on it but should I expect to see these kind of failures continuing? All of these failures seem common on the forum is there anything else I should expect to go wrong?

Message: IF U HAVE LIMITED SLIP DIFF, THEN YOUR REAREND IS TELLING U THAT SHE NEEDS HER PAMPER CHANGED. HAVE YOUR REAREND OIL CHANGED AND THE NOISE SHOULD GO AWAY. HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AND THE DEALER TOLD ME TO HAVE IT CHANGED EVERY 12,000 MILES

Message: LSD, every 12,000?
Oh sh&T!, I'm WAY behind on that one!
but, it may solve the problem as mike states. Oh course, make sure whoever does it uses the right kind of fluids-for LSD, if it is LSD.(limited slip differential)

Message: I also have a dakota w/the 5.2L engine. It has 127000 miles on it. IT has had its share of problems. Problems like switch failures and brakes should be expected w/increase in mileage. As for the seemingly common problems on the forum... thats what its for people dont normally use it to praise ther vehicle.

Message: I've had a similar noise my truck's rear-end. Turns out they had to replace the differential gearing (pinion something or other). My Dak has only 7k miles.

Message: Well I brought it to the dealer, they said rear end needed a complete rebuild, (lucky I bought that extended warantee). They said that my inner tie rod ends were bad and my serpentine belt needed to be replaced is this stuff also normal on atruck with 54 K on it that gets driven 90% highway, 9.999% city and .001% offroad?
I am going to change the tie rod ends and belt myself, they wanted $500.00 to do those two things with an alighnment.
I will have local shop do the alignment.

Message: It's best to have the dealer change the tie rod ends unless you've had experience with this type of front end. Rack and Pinion front ends aren't as forgiving as recipricating ball front ends in the older Daks.
If you plan to do it yourself, make sure to shore up the tie rods and try to get the geometry as close to right as possible or you'll put an undue amount of stress on the rack if you drive with misalligned tires.
$500 is worth it to have the work done by a mopar tech who will take responsibility for a front end f*ck up and Q/A it before returning it.
Just my $.02

Message: As for the gear noise, I wouldn't worry about it.. My rear started makeing whining noisies at 15k miles, at 81k miles I was rear-ended and it got worse, but i have yet to have any sort of odd noises from the rear... besides the 45-60mph howl....

Message: I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota not even a year old yet. It only has 19,000 miles on it and I just had to get new shocks, tie rod, and a ball joint for the front end. Now when I use my blinker my brake light goes out and also I hear a clunking noise in my rear end. Why am I having all of these problems if my truck is not even a year old what else can go wrong? I dont even go off road with my truck it is always driven in the city.
