Subject: High-pitched squeal from engine - 4.7? IP: Logged
Message: Within the past couple of weeks, I've noticed a high-pitched squeal from my engine. Doesn't really sound like a belt. It's a different sound than the alternator whine. It almost sounds like a squeaky wheel on a wagon! It usually happens right above idle. Typically, as the engine passes through about 750-2000 rpms, accelerating or decelerating, is when it mostly happens. Sometimes, but not usually, above or below that.
Any clues? I wanted to see what the experts on this board thought before I got in the idiot loop at the dealer! Also, will the dealer give me any grief for no clutch fan and different intake when performing warranty work?
2002 QC 4.7 auto 16,500 miles, no clutch fan, 360 AirIntakez

Message: Andrew,
Maybe a pulley, or more likely, girl in the back, or power steering pump.
Just to be safe, take the 30secs to thread the fan back on before you take it to the dealer. The rotation of the engine tightens it, and keeps it snug, just put it on hand tight, then no problems from the dealer about no fan!

Message: My '02 CC 4.7 just started making that noise. Sounds like a high pitched tone, just from 700 to 2000 rpm. I removed my clutch fan some time ago, so it can't be that. Cannot seem to pin down the noise, but it is coming from the front of the engine area.
Done a search on this forum, and several owners have noted the same problem, but nobody has found the answer.

Message: Well, the dealer ended up replacing the idler and tensioner pulleys. For the most part, the squealing went away. But, every once in a while I still hear it. I'll probably bring it back again to let the dealer have another shot at it.

Message: It does exibit the symptoms of a dry bearing squeal.
I did a search for TSB's and came up empty.
Thought with as many people complaining about it, it would show up by now.
I guess a look at the tensioners is the next step.

Message: sup guys, im a DC Tech here in dallas texas and i see your problem on a daily basis. it is the water pump if no other abnormal visual conditons exist. front seal in the water pump squealing all the time or can be an intermittent condition. put a water pump on it and i bet it goes away. just from my personal experience. see it all the time like i said b4. hope this helps.

Message: slow2dak,
Great info, I'll look at your posts even closer now knowing that you do this for a paycheck.
It would be great if you could post some other things that are typical, that maybe we don't mention much here on this forum.

Message: Andrew,
If I was a betting man, I would say that it is your Idler Pully. We had the same problem on our Caravan. I would take it in and ask the dealer about that? But I really think that is the problem.
Hope this helps.

Message: I had the same problem, turned out to be the water pump. The dealer I went to put a hole in my radiator in the replacement process. They tried to hide it from me buy putting in stop leak and when that didn't work they finally told me about it. They had to take a radiator out of a new dak sitting on the lot. I don't mind mistakes, we all make them but it really pisses me off people won't admit them.

Message: if you use the Mopar Rust Inhibitor w/lubricant it may work but i have only seen it work personally on the Jeeps 4.0. Tried it several times on 4.7's and no luck. dont know why but no cigar. just stick a pump on it and go.

Message: yeah it could be the same issue with your truck also. 318 and 360 water pumps do the same thing as the 287 but make sure. grab ahold of the fan and wiggle it and see if you have any slop in the pulley. if you got some play then more than likely the bearing in the pump is bad and will cause a high pitched whine or squeal.

Message: I have had that sound a couple of times but both times it has been the power steering pump. I have lost fluid levels and added air into the line twice now over 10,000 kms. Turns out the seals on the rack and pinion were shot. Had it replaced last week and the check engine light came on this morning. Back to the shop it goes.

Message: I read a Chrysler Technician manual tonight that said there was a sort of vent plug that needs to be removed when filling the cooling system during servicing. If this vent plug does not get removed, air could remain in the cooling system which specifically stated in the manual "Could damage the water pump seal"....and other parts as well. Could improper servicing be the culprit?

Message: The squeal does sound like it's coming from the water pump area, and after reading slow2dak's comments, I'm convinced. The noise doesn't start until the engine is hot.
Hopefully, the dealer will replace under warranty.
