Subject: FAN QUESTION 5.9 IP: Logged
Message: What is involved in removing the factory clutch fan? It appears held on by only the shaft with a big hex nut against the pulley. Do you simply unscrew it counterclockwise ?

Message: On the 4.7, sounds the same, and yes, you simply unscrew it counter-clockwise.
If the pulley slips on the belt, put a phillips screwdriver thru the holes in the front of the pulley, use a large wrench, and whack it with a hammer.
I guess you have the factory elec also?
HUh, huh,......he said 'whack it'....uh, huh huh huh.

Message: Yes I have a 02 dak with 5.9 and it has the electric fan.
So IF I understand right: the electric fan comes on when the AC is turned on & when engine temp coolant reaches 210 degrees.
So can the fan be used with a different controler to come on at 180 degrees ??? Or the PCM modified to activate it sooner? Will the factory fan provide enough cooling on its own?
Does a vendor have a kit or harness to accomplish this? Would love to get rid of that big heavy viscous fan. INPUT ???

Message: There's been LOT's of input on this subject.
I went with a 180 degree thermostat, and here in the HOuston/Galveston area, my truck never overheats, or gets that hot, even in traffic.
I'm using only the stock set-up, no other thermostat controllers.
If it's hot out, your a/c is on anyway. It's said going over about 30, and there's mnore than enough air going thru the fins on the radiator.
Many others are doing the same as I am, all with good results. Try a search on the subject on this site.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Message: Thanks for the info. I am going with an adjustable controller so cooling begins before
210 or 220 degress, if caught in heavy traffic.
Controller will still allow AC to turn on fan,
in addition to controller doing it.
Some model controllers also allow addition of
toggle switch control, in addition to all of above
Here are a couple part # for anyone interested
Painless 30102 or 30103
Perma Cool 18905
FlexAlite 30331 & manual switch 31148
Hayden 3647
some models have radiator probe sensors & some can be had with OEM style screw in sensors

Message: Good post!
Good info, good job.
I just turn my a/c on, with the control over to the warm side, and the compressor doesn't kick in, but the fan still comes on. Works about the same, but yours will be controlled automatically by a t-stat, with a little more parts and labor.
