Subject: 408 Oil Pan IP: Logged
Message: I've installed my 408 with the stock (Jeep Grand Cherokee(ZJ) 5.9) oil pan.
When I turn the motor over by hand, it gets pretty tough to turn & I get a hollow "tinny" noise at about 15*-20* ATDC for Cyl 1. My diagnosis is the stroker crank coming into contact with the oil pan(I'm open to other opinions).
How much different is the R/T oil pan? I have 4wd, so I'm guessing DC made a pan with a shallower front end for the ZJs so it would clear the axle.
Anyone know the dimensions of an R/T pan?
I just want to get this thing back on the road.

Message: I don't know the dimensions of an R/T pan but here's what I do know. When I had a 408 in my 2000 Ram 4x4, I used an oil pan from a 360 out of a Ram Van because my stock pan was not quite deep enough (I probably could have banged it out if I had to). Even on the van pan, I had to modify where the dipstick goes down because it still wanted to hit there.
Fast Forward....that motor has been rebuilt and is going in my '95 Dakota. I'm using an oil pan off of a '99 Dakota R/T. Per Marty at KRC Performance, when using the R/T pan, he has had no clearance issues on 408's. That pan will work on Ram's or Dakota's. If it would fit on your Jeep, you'd probably be all set. I'd give him a call and see. He may have done some 408 Jeep motors.
