Subject: Loudest exhaust?! IP: Logged
Message: Ok, I'm gonna end up running cat back duals on my 97 4wd. ext cab 5.2L. I'm gonna run a high flow cat, which do you guys think is better for that magnaflow or dynomax? Then I want to have a single in dual out muffler, either a flowmaster 40, dynowmax ultra flo, or one of edelbrocks loud mufflers (i haven't decided on one yet b/c their site is down so there's no way to look at all of them). Can anyone tell me what combonation would be the all around loudest, and what diameter exhaust should i run? When i say all around loud i mean loud as can be when idling, accelerating, and just cruisin'. THANKS!

Message: I'd say run the magnaflow cat with the flowmaster 40 series...and as far as pipe size...I'd hafta say 2 1/2"...or if you feel like going the extra mile go with 3"....it wouldn't make a huge difference though

Message: I run a single in dual out Flow 40 series. It's loud, but I wouldn't say it's annoying. People are definitely going to notice you when you hit the gas.
I set off alot of car alarms,,but I like doing that.

Message: I got a ravin exhaust that was done at the local muffler shop! Pretty loud thats for sure and not a bad job for the local shop! I also have 4 inch tips that help a bit! At idle sounds decent but when you get into it it sounds nasty! Recommend a high flo cat though made mine sound a bit better!

Message: I've got single 3" cat, single 3" flowmaster 3 chamber, and an angled turn-down just before the axle. With my 5-speed it's as loud as I want it to be.
The biggest difference I think is where you exit after the muffler..... the more pipe behind the muffler, the quieter the exhaust. (Assuming you have to have a cat and muffler.)

Message: Hey Demon Dakota, would you mind taking pics of your TRUE DUALS from the motor to the exits and sending them to me? I've been looking for someone to run true duals for me but no one will do it, and if i have pics maybe someone will go by those for me. Thanks!
rasler@earthlink.net
Also how big of noise difference will there be if i run single in dual out flowmaster 40, as opposed to single in single out 40? Which will give me the most performance, and which will give me the most sound?

Message: I'm runnig a flowmaster 3" in and dual 2.5" out with a magnaflow cat on my 92 4x4 with the magnum360. The real trick is to reduce the converter outlet from 3" down to 2.5" all the way to the muffler and then go back to 3" as you enter the muffler. The ever so slight restriction will create a real deep tone at idle and bark like a son of a gun going down the road.

Message: First of all thanks in advance Demon Dakota. And secondly, MADMAC9141, how long is the pipe betwen your cat and muffler? Also what is the in and out diameter on your cat, and did you just clamp all those pipes in between the 2 or did you weld them? Just so I can get an idea of what lengths of the pipes i need between the muffler and cat. Sorry for all these stupid question but, Thanks guys! Everything is very helpful.

Message: Kelby:
My cat is 3" in/out and the full system is welded to prevent hassles with the state troopers around here. The pipe between my cat and muffler is 24" and is all one pipe. I had a shop in town make it by simply expanding a 2.5"pipes ends to fit.
Also as far as dual outlet mufflers compared to single, I've been told that singles will give better power due to reduced turbulance in the muffler. Personaly I see no differance but the guys at flowmaster probly know better than I.

Message: Hey NATE, what year is your dakota? The reason i'm asking is how did you get around the check engine light coming on b/c of the o2 sensor? Also is this safe to remove the cat, b/c I would think you would lose torque or HP b/c it's meant to run with a cat in the first place? Thanks!

Message: Kelby,
Your not kidding about the problem with removing the cat. I made that mistake and it cost me not only power but also 4 mpg on the hiway. It definitly was worth it to put a cat back on. But ofcourse not the stocker.

Message: I e-mailed you guys some pics, and I'll take more this week when I get some free time. Sorry to take so long, but I've had a hectic week. I'll get you some more pics when I get it on a lift (or at least on some ramps or something). I'll try to get as many angles as I can when I get the truck in the air a bit. I know the ones I sent might be slightly vauge, but it shows the pipes running down the right side into the mufflers (and no third cat).
And to answer your question TheSync, hell no I couldn't pass emissions, but I don't have to have them done (yet). I'll go more "emissions legal" when I have my final exhaust setup (blown setup w/ headers).
