Subject: Custom PCM for 2001+ 4.7 IP: Logged
Message: Yes, I've searched this on every site, but I still need a little more info...I know that KB and ASE can do custom flashes for our PCM's. But neither gets rid of the speed limiter. I know ASE does in O/D but that's not where I need it to be gone. Is it worth the $$$ to not be able to surpass that or does the increase in performance make up for it? Anyone know if B&G Chrylser can remove the speed limiter or if they'll even do a 4.7???
Thanks!

Message: B&G has not had good luck finding any power for the 4.7's and they don't flash them anymore.
ASE physically bends open the case of the PCM and inserts a new chip. I know of at least one person with a 4.7 who sent in his PCM three different times and got zero gains. The last time, they told him that they could not do anything else to the box or the outer case would break off, leaving the guts exposed.
I also know that the site administrator over at dakotatrucks.com has the Kenne Bell Optimizer II flash and his truck has NO limiters, and makes good power. You might try him out and see what he'll say.

Message: From what I read about the site amdin, he has a 5spd, so no limiter there. I wonder if I told them that my limiter was higher for some reason, if they would move it even higher. According to my GPS, I'm actually am higher. 102 to be exact. Maybe it has something to do with my tires being a little taller than stock. I know my speedo is reading 5mph slow based on GPS and friend who is a cop w/ radar and laser on his squad car.

Message: The Kenne Bell Does not really remove the Limiter, they move it beyond the Capabilities of a Stock or Slightly modified Truck. It's moved to 135 mph, and I had to add mods and lower the truck before it would ever bump that speed limiter. And I had miles and miles of Highways with no speed limits to test it on.
Other Problem with the 98 or 100 mph speed Limiter is Kenne Bell will not crank it up, and telling them more will not do, because the moment they hook it up to program it they will see what it's set at. I promise you unless you turbo or super charge your engine the 100 will be OK on a 1/4 mile track.

Message: Has anyone looked in to perfectpower.com? They make a piggyback system that comes in a pretty complete kit. You tune it yourself on your PC then you have to wire it in yourself. The kit is called the SMT6 DEV kit. It goes for $768.00 from IDAautomotive.com out of New Jersey. There are free downloads off of the perfectpower.com web site. And if they don't have you engine on the web page they will make a wiring diagram for you.
Shoot them an e-mail to see what they have to say. I'm still looking into it but I want to get some R/T rims first. My traction sucks.

Message: Lynn- yeah, i figured they would know, I may build a switch or something inline with the abs so that i can shut it off. Can they flash the HO cams in? If not, I'm still pretty sure that it will help to tie all my mods together.

Message: OUr 5speed manual's have a limiter, it's at 117mph.
.alex., I definitely listen (read) what you have to say in regards to the allmightly 4.7(since I own one). I"ve also heard (read) good things about the KBII optimizer flash, (lynn, et.al.).
I think if and when I get a flash done, this will be the one. If theres one that will work in our OBDII port with a laptop though, that would be the ticket. I've also learned thru research (read it), that thew 01+ are virtually Impossible to program that way. WHAT WERE THESE IDIOT PROGRAMERS THINKING? THIS IS NOT NATIONAL DEFENSE OR ANYTHING!

Message: You've got to admit that if they opened to code to the public and let anyone take a crakc at it, some neck-bone will inevitably fry his computer and screw his truck so hard that it won't run. Then he will come back to the dealer and accuse them of sabotaging the truck and there will be warranty issues and lawsuits, etc.....
It's too big a nightmare.
Plus, I really don't think that DC even had it in mind that people would be trying to crack the codes and turn a pickup truck into a fire-breathing racer. If you think about how many people surf this site and DTO and Dakotatrucks and DakotaUSA and the others.... it's not that many people in relationship to the number of Dakotas that are sold world wide. The engineers weren't planning on catering to a grand total of maybe 2500-3000 speedfreaks. They were trying to cater to the EPA and the tens of thousands of non speedfreak Dakota customers all over the world.
But we may get soemwhere yet. I know of an R/T guy who's working on cracking the 01-and-later codes as we speak. i just hope he's going to hook the 4.7 guys up too.
BTW, Leach raised my speed limiter to 255 mph. And my rev limiter is 6800 rpm. But they have only got 4 to 5 set flashes that they will hit the box with. Anything custom beyond those will cost you $150 extra and you pretty much have to tell him what you want. In other words, they really have no idea how to account for the HO cams.

Message: Dawg,
When you call ask for Victor Cruz, he is the man there. He will send you a release form and a Spec sheet so you can put all the Mods you have in. Then when you send it to them they will Program it according to the Mods you have. And also request the top rpm's and speed Limiter, (only problem is that the 4.7L can't be taken any higher than 135 mph, or it will Throw a MIL Light, that's why they only take it to 135) but I had my max rpm's turned up to 7,000 rpm's. I plan on turbo charging mine and going to an external oil pump, cause Marty has found that a 5 speed at 1st to 2nd shift over 6,000 or 6,500 rpm's will shear the oil pump shaft and will require an external oil pump to prevent this.
