Message: ok, here is my question. can you tell me the difference in programming on a 4.7 auto PCM and a 4.7 stick PCM. as bernd said in an earlier post, the 4.7 stick PCM changed the shift quality on the 4.7 auto truck? why? where is the difference when the trans controller and pcm commuinicate with each other on the bus. does the 4.7 stick PCM change the communication between the 2 controllers or how does it change the shift quality in the 45RFE. i spoke with the STAR Hotline, which is what us dealership personel use when working on vehicles giving us problems and they cant ever tell me anything. so anyone have any experience with swapping PCM's from a 4.7 stick to a 4.7 auto, id love to hear anything you have to say. sorry for the long post.

Message: I've swapped PCMs between 4.7s with different transmissions.
With the programming for the automatic the PCM retards the timing to soften the shift, supposedly to extend transmission life and also make it easier on the whole drivetrain. There is no such extra programming the the manual trans PCM. If you put the PCM from a manual trans in an automatic truck it will shift VERY firmly in all gears. Unfortunately, without the additional instructions in the PCM - it doesn't know to downshift when you slow down, load the engine harder or come to a stop. You have to manually shift it back to 1st or downshift it manually also.
This test was done just to show my buddy the difference between the stock program and the one I was running...... that and the fact that his factory tach went to 7,000 rpms and we wanted to see how high it revved also. (almost pegged the 7,000 rpm tach!)
The automatic PCM in my manual trans truck made no differences - other than after a few miles it set some MIL lights for the ABS and Brake lights because it didn't find the right VIN numbers to match the truck. The automatic truck did the same... it also set MIL lights without the proper VIN number programmed in.
So if you go to the track and just want to see how much the "soft" shift is costing in time - you can swap PCMs out of a manual...... but it's a PITA to drive on the street.

Message: thanks Duner, i think i got it confused who posted tha thread about the PCM's. my bad, no hard feelings. appreciate the info. ive got my hands on a 4.7 5 speed PCM and imma try it out here in a few days. i can handle the abs and brake light, ill just use my DRB to erase the codes every few miles. ive run as fast as 15.40 @89.25 with a 2.09 short time. id like to see if the shifts have a direct effect on E/T. thanks man.

Message: supposedly you can unplug your tranny line pressure sensor and it will shift firmer...I had no luck with it though (not that I could tell).
